[edit] Introduction

FanworksFinder.com is a website where visitors can find, rate and discuss fan fiction, fan art, fan vids and fandom-related meta located all over the web. It's part "Digg", part wiki, and part directory. The site went live on July 19, 2007. It is run by ScrewTheDaisies. Some of its main features are discussed below.

Centralized recommendations system

Fanworks Finder is more than just a fanworks locater/directory. It's also a centralized recs system. Users can post listings to fanworks they've enjoyed (whether they've created them or not--much like they might post links to and information about fanworks they like to their personal blog or website), and they can "rec" (add a recommendation for) fanworks that other users have listed.

For each listing that has received user recommendations, visitors can see what other stories from that fandom the reccers have recommended, thus the visitors can receive suggestions for other related fanworks they may enjoy.

Visitors can also view what other fanworks other users have recommended by visiting the user's profile.

Reader-oriented

Fanworks Finder is designed for readers. Users can leave brief (or comprehensive) reviews for fanworks listed on the site to help other visitors decide if a given story, fanart or vid is something they might be interested in.

Users also have the power to rate reviews that others have left. This allows the more useful reviews ("The characters go a little OOC here and there, but the plot more than makes up for it.." and "If you like vampires, aliens and schmoop, you'll like this fic.") to rise to the top while the less useful ones ("Yay draw more!" and "U SUK!!11") get pushed down to the bottom.

Fan-listings wiki

Fanworks Finder is also part wiki in that any logged-in user can edit any listing on the site. Users can add tags, characters, pairings and more—correct misspellings, expand the summary information.... All of these edits help improve the database, and therefore help improve the overall search functionality.

[edit] Site Policies

FanworksFinder isn't technically an archive; it's a directory of fanworks listings. Any logged-in user can add or edit a listing, whether they created the fanwork or are just a fan of it. This wiki-like structure ensures that the listings are being continually refined and improved. An owner of a fanwork listed on the site can have the listing removed.

[edit] Site History

The site opened for a public beta test on July 19, 2007. It had been in alpha testing for about a month prior to that.
