[edit] Introduction

Metallica slash fiction has been online since 1998, beginning with the Tallific mailing list. The Metslash list spun off it. Rockfic, which opened on April 26, 2004, now houses a large number of Metallica stories. Metallica has also inspired an impressive number of Metallica tribute bands--more than forty as of December 2007.

[edit] The Band

Metallica was formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1981 when singer/guitarist James Hetfield hooked up with drummer Lars Ulrich. They played their first live show on March 4, 1982 with Ron McGovney on bass and Dave Mustaine on lead guitar. Later that year, McGovney was replaced with Cliff Burton. Dave Mustaine was fired in April 1983, replaced by Kirk Hammett. On September 27, 1986, Cliff Burton was killed in a tour bus accident in Sweden. With tour dates pending, the band replaced him with Jason Newsted only one month later and went back on the road. Newsted quit the band in early 2001. The band recorded their next album, Saint Anger, with their producer, Bob Rock, on bass. When it was finished and tour plans were being made, the band auditioned Pepper Keenan, Jeordie White (aka Twiggy Ramirez), Scott Reeder, Eric Avery, Danny Lohner, Chris Wyse and Robert Trujillo for the bass player position. Trujillo got the job.

[edit] Terminology

Below is a list of terms and their definitions that are used in the Metallica fandom.

[edit] Timeline

Below is a partial timeline of events which took place in this bandom.

[edit] 1980s

  • The band was formed in early 1981.
  • Lead guitarist Dave Mustaine was fired from the band in April 1983[1]. James Hetfield calls up Kirk Hammett, and big name in the San Francisco underground metal scene. Kirk flew from New York to audition, and a week later Kirk Hammett(Exodus) joins the band and a month later they begin recording their debut album Kill 'Em All.
  • On September 27, 1986, bassist Cliff Burton was killed in a tour bus accident in Sweden. The band replaced him with Jason Newsted (Flotsam and Jetsam) one month later.

[edit] 1990s

  • In 1992 the two-part documentary A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica was released on VHS. Part one focuses on the making of the Metallica album. Part two follows Metallica on a 14-month stretch of the tour supporting the album. Both parts gave fans access to Metallica beyond the usual concert footage or magazine interviews.
  • From 1994 to 1996, Killing Time Productions filmed a documentary of Metallica and "the outer limits of fan worship." The documentary was funded by "Metallica money for the band's own private amusement." This documentary was hotly traded and bootlegged[2].
  • On November 13, 1998, Spooks started Tallific, a mailing list for Metallica slash fiction.

[edit] 2000s

  • In May 2000, Bob Cesca posted his first animated cartoon poking fun at Metallica, "Napster Bad," on Camp Chaos[3]. The James character is an oversized knuckle-dragger while tiny Lars jumps around the screen and James like a monkey.
  • In September 2000, Ruth Sadelle Alderson left Tallific to create the Metslash Yahoo Group, another mailing list for Metallica slash fiction. One major difference between Metslash and Tallific was that Metslash allowed stories with the bandmembers' wives and girlfriends in them.
  • The first Metallibash, a fan-run convention in San Francisco, was held in 2001. Kirk Hammett and Lars Ulrich made a surprise appearance after midnight and played with the tribute band Creeping Death. More than 100 fans were in attendance and over $700 was raised for charity.
  • In early 2001, bassist Jason Newsted quit the band.
  • In 2002, fan larself began work on "The Secret Project," which was revealed to be a video game based on the band's early years. In 2003, a demo of larself's Secret Project was released. By 2004, however, the demo download link no longer worked. The last post by larself/Monika to the forum was on October 15, 2005. The site's forum has since been overrun by spam bots and there is no word on the status of the project.
  • The second Metallibash was held in 2002. More than 300 people attended and $1600 was raised for charity.
  • In 2003, Robert Trujillo became the band's new bassist.
  • The 2003 Metallibash lasted a week and included attending the Summer Sanitarium show at Candlestick Park, a trip to Six Flaggs Marine World, a pre-season 49ers vs. Raiders game and the traditional Pre-Bash party at Tommy's Joynt.
  • On February 1, 2003, in response to the deletion of the LiveJournal community fanficdotnet, the LiveJournal community music_fic was created. (Herongale) It would host Audioslave, Eighteen Visions, Fall Out Boy, Foo Fighters, Good Charlotte, Green Day, HIM, Hoobastank, Linkin Park, Lostprophets, Mest, Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, Rancid band fiction.'
  • On June 3, 2003, the Russian Metallica LiveJournal community ru_metallica was created. [4]
  • On August 5, 2003, the Metallica LiveJournal community _metallica was created. [5]
  • In 2004, cg started the James Hetfield Hair Watch site[6], with commentary on James's changing hairstyles and facial hair.
  • In May 2004, Metallichicks opened a fan fiction section on their message board.
  • In 2004, the documentary Some Kind of Monster was released, giving fans the same intimate access to the band as 1992's A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica" had.
  • On February 4, 2006, Metworld, a chapter of the official Metallica Fan Club (MetClub) held a fan convention at The Cavern in Liverpool, UK[7].
  • The Metallimania documentary filmed from 1994-1996 was finally made available for purchase in 2005[8].
  • After skipping a year, Metallibash was held again in 2005, this time at the Presidio, the government installation where Metallica first began recording the album St. Anger. $2,456 was raised for charity. 2006 was skipped, and as of December 24, 2007, the Metallibash website[9] says that the bash will be held on June 16, 2007 on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, but no information on how it went.
  • This bandom was represented in the 2007 xmas_rocks exchange, with 1 story posted in January of that year.[10]
  • This bandom was represented in the 2008 xmas_rocks exchange, with 1 story posted in January of that year.[11]

[edit] Influential fan works

  • "Best Days of Our Lives" - An AU by Spooks that takes place in an English boarding school. (Spooks is listed as "Akuma" on this page because it's from the "Public Archive" where pseudonyms for their pseudonyms were used.)
  • "Crux" by ScrewTheDaisies - won second place in TerrorUnknown's 2002 fanfic contest in the category of "Lost Souls."
  • ...And Misery for All by ScrewTheDaisies - won first place in TerrorUnknown's 2002 fanfic contest in the category of "The Shadows of Dread."

  • MetalliLand: the fantasy - a collection of stories by newc that are told through the use of photos of the Metallica action figures.
  • Rock and Roll Kidz - A fanfic written in 2001 in script format by JAYMZ 1. Originally posted on the MetClub (official Metallica fan club) forum, it was moved to its own site so that JAYMZ 1 could post longer parts and bigger pictures. It features past and present Metallica members, Axl Rose, Motley Crue and more. It is interesting to note that JAYMZ 1 is a guy.
