Purpose
What is the purpose of FanFictionNetBot?
- To increase the speed of adding new articles. Most of the information that FanFictionNetBot is gathering had previously been manually added by Fan History contributors.
- Helping members of fandom find out what happened to their favorite authors.
- Documenting wank, fights, good works and other things done by members of fandom that deserve recognition.
- Ferreting out plagiarism by having a place where people can easily find dates for when authors, fan artists and vidders created their works.
- Creating the first comprehensive fandom directory that anyone can edit in order to improve the quality of the directory.
- Centralizing information about fandom when things are becoming more decentralized.
- Preserving the history of fandom and documenting what members have been doing.
Known issues
FanFictionNetBot has several known issues in creating articles.
- First, the capitalization of FanFiction.Net is not always consistent.
- Second, if a user name has a space in it, the link to FanWorksFinder won't be right. The space in the url needs to be replaced with a +.
- The third problem relates to FanFiction.Net. The names of categories on FanFiction.Net are always the same as the names used on Fan History. Sometimes, it is spacing. Sometimes, they just are not fandoms that Fan History would have. Example: StarTrek: Voyager, Buffy crossovers, Fanfiction poetry.
- Fourth, FanFictionNetBot is adding categories based on fandoms people have written for. These categories may not exist on Fan History and will need to be created.
- Fifth, FanFictionNetBot sometimes treats commas and periods in categories as new categories. Example: House M.D. ends up in Category:House fans, Category:M.D. fans.
- Sixth, FanFictionNetBot does not recognize non-English language characters.
- Seventh, FanFictionNetBot requires a manual restart and if a typo is made in doing that, it creates based on the number added which means profiles might be missed or repeated.
- Eighth, the Fanfiction Poetry category on FanFiction.Net was deleted, with all contents but the dead story links still show up on author profiles and FanFictionNetBot is picking them up.
FanFictionNetBot added so many articles to Category:People that the category does not load. A solution to this problem will be founded when the bot is done running. What will likely happen is that Category:People will be removed from most articles and replaced with an alphabetical index. Example: Category:People (A), Category:People (B). An extension may also be added to make navigation easier.
Privacy concerns
Is this an invasion of privacy? The answer is no. FanFictionNetBot is only taking information that you have made publicly available on FanFiction.Net: Your user name, the fandoms you have written in, a timeline of dates that you published your fan fiction, and links to your profile and stories you have written. If you have additional concerns about privacy in fandom, please see Help:Privacy for advice on how to protect your on-line fandom privacy.
Article creation
Articles created by FanFictionNetBot can be found in the Robot created stubs category.
Articles created by this bot can be easily identified as they contain the following template on the bottom of every page created by the bot:
Article names and clean up
If no page exists for the author's FanFiction.Net, a new article will be created with just their name as the article title. If a page on Fan History already exists for an author's name, a disambiguation page was created which lists the page that already exists and the page about the author. The author's page name, instead of being just their name, would include (FanFiction.Net Author) in the article name.
There were over 1,000 articles about people in fandom on Fan History before FanFictionNetBot started its work. This means that there is a good chance that some people will have two entries. The duplicate entries need to be merged and the disambiguation page needs to be fixed. Please help Fan History be editing pages where you see this as a problem.
Article updates
FanFictionNetBot was created for one time use. If you update on FanFiction.Net, post new stories, FanFictionNetBot is not going to automatically detect the changes. FanFictionNetBot will not go back and access pages for people who it has already created pages about. Future updates to pages about a person would thus be dependent on some one else updating the page about the individual.
Deletion requests
If you do not like a page about you existing on Fan History and would like to see it deleted, please reference Help:Article deletion to find out how. Please see Help:People for other ways to respond to author pages created about yourself.
