Citing sources

Suggested methods of citing sources:

Links

Add a link to a website where you go a quote or piece of information from by putting in the web address after the relevant bit of information. [1]

People citations

Put information in parentheses after the information to let people know the source. (User:Laura)

References

If you have read a lot, create a references or sources list at the bottom of the page. Include links, formal citations, etc. Example:

  • Fandom Wank Wiki
  • Jenkins, Henry. Textual Poachers Television Fans & Participatory Culture. New York: Routledge, 1992.
  • Langley, Katherine. Telephone interview.

Citation disputes

At times, there may be a dispute regarding a citation or lack of citation. The following templates can be inserted into the text to inform readers and fellow editors of this problem:

[citation needed]

{{Fact}}

This is put after text that you think might not be a fact or dispute or want to see cited.

[citation dead link]

{{Citation to dead link}}

This is put after a citation to a dead link. It is better to use this than to remove the citation. Ideally, another citation should be found instead.

[citation is locked]

{{Citation to Locked Content}}

This is put after a citation where the citation is to locked content that not everyone can view. Ideally, a non-locked citation should be found.

[citation non-specific]

{{Citation to large post}}

This is put after a citation where the citation is to a large threaded post and the citation references a specific threaded comment. The citation needs to be edited to include a link to the specific comment in the threaded discussion.

[neutrality disputed]

{{POV-statement}}

This is put after text that you think is not neutral or where you think it provides a biased point of view.
