Vid is the most common term for the musical/visual merging of popular music with media images. Shortened from the term Music Video made popular by the early 80's introduction of such cable channels as MTV, fans were already making music videos before that channel launched. Sometimes down with a series of static slide show images set to music, early vids included fans capturing images directly form TV screens with hand held cameras and then using first , expensive editing software and later less expensive VCR to VCR splicing to set selected images to music.

The onset of less expensive video editing software on home PC's has allowed virtually anyone to create a vid. However, many vid fans, hold their product to the same kind of standards a great many people attempt to hold Fan fiction, that the proper understanding of pacing , cutting, angle, storyline. Vids, like stories, require a structure and involve more than merely matching images to music or lyric lines.

Vids, more than any other Fan works are likely to bring down legal action, albeit not necessarily from the use of copyright images as much as because the RIAA taken up such a crusade against the unauthorized distribution of music.
