1972 is just another year. Star Trek fen continued their tradition. University science fiction clubs continued to publish , that the Sherlock Holmes and Edgar Rice Burroughs pastiche communities continued on, and that Man from U.N.C.L.E. fans were still distributing stories privately.

Thanks to scholars and fan historians like Verba and Langley, there is a record of what happened in the Star Trek fan fiction community. Verba cites this year as important, setting three Star Trek fanzine milestones. These are listed as:

(1) The Star Trek Welcommittee (STW) came into being.
(2) The first major Star Trek convention took place: the Star Trek convention in New York City took place in January, and the Detroit Triple Fan Fair later on in the year.
(3) The Star Trek Association for Revival (STAR) issued its first newsletter.

Also this year, STAR’s newsletter filled the hole left by Deck 6 which had ceased publishing. Professional, established authors seemed to be more involved in fan fiction this year than in previous years. Marion Zimmer Bradley and Larry Niven were just two authors who were involved this year. They were either writing and publishing fan fiction in fanzines or were actively allowing people to write fan fiction in the universes they created. Letters, petitions, surveys, discussion and essays seemed to be a dominating theme, overshadowing most of the fan fiction that was published this year.
