1988 and things were happening in several communities but one of the most vocal fan fiction communities was Blake’s 7.

A number of additional fan fiction communities are born. Among them are, by this time, Lost Boys, with at least one story published this year, appearing in the first issue of Heart's Blood. Another community being actively established this year was the Phantom of the Opera community. From October 1988 to September 1992, 12 issues of Phantom Notes were published to create dialogue between Phantom of the Opera fans. While a letter zine, there were a number of poetry submissions and pieces of fan art.

The Blake's 7 fan fiction community was having a busy year with a number of things happening. There was ActorFic. There was actor interaction and slash. There were Mary Sues. In terms of ActorFic in the community, Laurie Haldeman and Jean Airey published the Blake's 7 ActorFic story “The Totally Imaginary Cheeseboard.” The story, according to Langley involved “Avon appearing at Scorpio Con, being mistaken (naturally) for Paul Darrow.“ This story was done with the full knowledge of Paul Darrow and others involved in the story. The actors apparently had no problems with these stories being distributed. At the same time that the ActorFic was being written, the actors from the Blake's 7 fandom had been interacting with the fen at conventions. They had been doing this since 1982. Starting in 1987 and going into 1988, various fen started sharing slash based on characters from Blake’s 7 with the actor. The actors were not amused by this as they did not like seeing their characters being portrayed that way. The Blake’s 7 fan fiction community then kerfluffled amongst themselves in response. This attitude of the actor not appreciating having fen show them where their character was slashed continues in the modern day in various fan fiction communities including the West Wing. In addition to all that, Mary Sue was heavily present in the community. According to Sweet Mary Sue, a number of fan fiction authors in the Blake's 7 Australian fan fiction community were writing Mary Sues. These Mary Sues were frequently paired with Travis as their primary love interest.

The comic book fan fiction continued on. One event happening in that community this year was the founding of the MZS Amateur Press Association was founded.
