1989 and all was quiet on the fan fiction front. Communities were still being built and things were happening, but no important dialogues regarding content oriented discussion are indicated as happening in this year. The Internet begins to be more important and zines keep on being published. Awards happen. Canon universes spring up.

Awards in the fan fiction community continue. The Star Trek fan fiction zine and club community had created their own awards, in addition to and despite the existence of the FanQs. One example of this is the awards given by the Starfleet club. M. I. "Morgan" Morey, one of her stories won the Alpha Award for Best Author Fiction in Region Two of Starfleet. Starduster II, the fanzine she edited, took Best Fanzine that same year.

Additional fan fiction communities are making their presence felt with the publication of fanzines. Airwolf was represented in the world of fanzines. One zine out which included an Airwolf story was Heat #4. The Phantom of the Opera fan fiction community has a zine presence. An example of a fanzine put out this year in this community includes Faded Roses issue 2.

Mailing lists start making their first inroads in various fan fiction communities. While it will take a bit of time for them to become as common and elementally important in the fan fiction community as Usenet groups, it will eventually happen. One community which used mailing lists early was the comic book fan fiction community. In this year, the Superguy mailing list was founded. It was created so that comic book fan fiction fen could have a place for their original super hero fiction.

In the world of canon universes, a number of shows which will spawn fan fiction communities are on the air. These include The Rescue Rangers and Quantum Leap.
