After twenty-two successful coach ambushes, outlaw Ben Wade is captured and a posse is formed to bring him to the town of Contention to put him on the 3:10 train to Yuma prison. Dan Evans, a bankrupt rancher, accepts the duty for $200, which he hopes to use to pay his creditors and save his land. During the journey, Ben reveals his ambiguous nature, which fascinates and repels the men who travel with him.
The film is set during the late 1800s--definitely after the American Civil War, though the movie itself supplies no fixed date. (The FAQ at imdb.com claims that the first page of 3:10 to Yuma 2007's shooting script places it as 1884.)
