731_North_St._Louis_-_The_Outsiders_Fan_Fiction_Board was created September 7, 2007 for fan fiction authors in The Outsiders fandom to gather and discuss the issues with writing fan fic. The site's name is derived from the filming location of the Curtis house in the Outsiders movie.

The board is hosted by Zetaboards, and as of October 2008, has over 380 members and 58,000 posts. There is also a free chat room on the board. Guests can only view two forums (Board Rules and Writing Technique) and guests must join to get read access to the other boards and posting access to all boards.

The forums on the board available to general members include:

  • Board Rules, Info and Announcements - Board rules, welcome message, posting guidelines, info about board issues and announcements about new forums, new features and other events. (Open to guests to read)
  • Canon Characters - For discussion of any of the characters that appear in the source material - the Outsiders book, the movie and/or the TV series, as it relates to fan fiction writing and reading.
  • Original Characters - For discussion about original characters created by fan fic authors for Outsiders fiction, including solid characters that you enjoy as well as Mary Sue characters and how to avoid them.
  • Writing Technique, Information, Ideas and FF.net - For discussion about plots, point of view, pacing, setting, plot ideas and other issues you come across while writing Outsiders fan fiction. Also discuss ff.net and fan fiction in general. (Open to guests to read)
  • Research - For any research material that might prove useful to Outsiders fan fic writers., including information about the 1960s. Members can request and receive as well as share information here.
  • Good Fic - A place to share links to good or half-decent Outsiders fan fic. Members may encourage people to read certain stories and review them, members may advertise their own well-written story and generally talk about the good in the fandom.

After posting to certain levels, members are given access to other boards:

  • Outsiders Book, Movie and TV Series Discussion - This forum also includes a sub-forum called TV Series Summaries/Reviews & Discussion with information pertaining to the 1990 TV series. Discuss the book, movie or TV show, discuss the actors and their other work as well as S.E. Hinton's other books. (5 posts required for automatic access)
  • Anything Goes - An off-topic board for members to discuss anything that is not related to fan fiction. Contains member intros, games, links, personal chat etc. There is also a subforum called Fan Fiction Writing Contest for a contest the board is running.(20 posts required for automatic access)
  • Outsiders Stories - For sharing Outsiders fan fiction that you are writing. Stories may be posted here instead of FanFiction.net or to get feedback and beta reading before posting at ff.net or other fan fiction sites. (50 posts required for automatic access)
  • Sexxor Therapy - An over 18 board to discuss sex in writing and for sharing R or NC-17 fiction and to discuss issues present in writing fics for the over 18 crowd. (50 posts and age 18+ required in order to request access - not automatic)
  • Original Stories - For posting any original (not fan fiction) fiction and non-fiction writing for the purpose of getting feedback and advice from other members. (100 posts required for automatic access)
  • Bad Fic - A place to share links to bad fan fiction, spork badfic and lament over the state of the Outsiders section. Also includes a sub-forum called NOADS Sporks which houses all of the fic sporks NOADS has written for the community, as well as a sub-forum for the Bad Fic Awards. (150 posts required for automatic access)


Users are also given gang name user titles that mark certain posting milestones; after 2500 posts, a member can change the title to anything they wish.

[edit] Board Features and Events

  • Movie Chats - The board has hosted a few movie chats, where a movie (usually related to either S.E. Hinton or the actors from the Outsiders movie) is selected and everyone watches it at the same time while chatting in the board chat room.
  • Good Fic Day - The board community created and hosts "Good Fic Day" which occurs on the first Wednesday of each month. The aim is to write better fan fiction and raise the quality of writing at FanFiction.net. The participants essentially flood the front page of ff.net with quality writing.
  • Challenges - The Outsiders Stories section has hosted a number of fic challenges, the aim being to write a one-shot or story along certain parameters.
  • Fiction Writing Contest - The board is hosting a fiction writing contest in October and November 2008, with various Outsiders prizes.

The board is also host to NOADS, an entity which sporks badfic. NOADS holds the position of "Sporkers-in-Residence" at the board.
