[edit] Name of fandom
There have been a number of terms used to distinguish the canon (and fandom) for this movie as separate from the rest of the Star Trek universe. Some of these terms are used more frequently in one area of media fandom over another. These terms include:
- Star Trek AOS (Also: ST:AOS or STAOS). Short for "Alternative Original Series." This term originated on the ASCEML mailing list, where it was voted on as the preferred name for the new canon. It is the term more used on Yahoogroups for Star Trek and within the ASCEML community.
- Star Trek Reboot - This term is used more widely on LiveJournal and Dreamwidth Studios
The ksarchive.com uses the following terms to distinguish between them:

- The fandom for the film -- as both separate and integrated into greater Star Trek fandom -- took off rapidly, especially on LiveJournal. Numerous new communities sprung up in May and June of 2009, both specific to the film and embracing all canons. These communities covered the full gamut of fandom-specific and content-specific LJ comms, from fan fiction to icons to a kink meme to rpf.

[edit] Kerfluffles
[edit] Old school fen vs. new fen
With the release of the film, there was a large wave of newfound interest in the Star Trek universe, although many of these new fans felt fine sticking with the canon of the AOS. Some "long time" Star Trek fans resented this attitude and felt one should not attempt to write Star Trek fan-fiction or otherwise engage in the fandom until one became versed in the history of the fandom and older canon. This caused some wank in communities such as fanficrants.[8]
[edit] Uhura's hair
There as a kerfluffle in late May 2009, early June 2009 over Uhura's hair. There was a question whether Uhura's totally straight waist-length pony tail was somehow dissing the diverse and varied nature of black women's hair. [citation needed]
[edit] Fanboys vs. fangirls
Some male Star Trek and science fiction fans complained that the new film had brought in too many "fangirls" who were only interested in Trek now because of the "eye-candy" of the young male actors. post_tets and petshopboy1983 were the main instigators of this kerfluffle, at least within the startrek LiveJournal community.[9] These accusations have generally been met with much eye-rolling and accusations of trolling, as many women have tried to point out that they have been interested in both science-fiction in general and Star Trek in particular for many years--and may even be the second-generation of fans within their family.[10]
[edit] Fandom reactions to movie
While many fans of Star Trek: The Original Series enjoyed the film very much, there were some dissenting opinions regarding certain plot points, as well as the treatment of women in the movie. Some did not like the death of Spock's mother, Amanda, and in general felt that the original series, back in the 1960s, had put the female characters to better use than here where they seemed to only serve as plot points, motivation and love interests for the male characters.[11],[12]
After the release of the film, there was a great interest in the Spock/Uhura pairing, along with the already established Kirk/Spock. There was some friction between the supporters of the two pairings. Some seemed to feel there was racist and/or misogynistic undertones in breaking up Spock/Uhura, which was canon in the new film universe, or ignoring the establishment of this relationship in favor of promoting Kirk/Spock.[13] Others argued that slash fandom had been doing this for years and the only reason this situation was generating argument and debate was that the fandom was taking off in the midst of Race Fail 2009.
