Adam Lambert was the runner-up for the 8th season of American Idol. As has happened in some previous seasons, as runner-up he has garnered more attention and fandom than the season's winner, Kris Allen. His openly gay status has made him the subject of a great deal of media attention and fandom appreciation, notably in slash fandom where Kradam has developed a huge following very quickly.

[edit] The Artist

Before his appearance on American Idol, Lambert was a stage actor who had appeared in numerous musical-theater productions such as "Grease", "Camelot", and "Peter Pan." On Idol, Lambert cited such artist as Queen, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, and Led Zeppelin as his influences. While heavily praised by the judges for his performances and gaining huge popularity within fandom, some wondered if he could win the popular vote before "middle America" might not be ready for his glam/very flamboyant presence. Rumors about his sexuality abounded after a picture surfaced on the internet showing him kissing another man. He would not deny the speculation, making him potentially the first openly non-heterosexual contestant with a strong chance of winning the competition.[1] He ended up coming in second to Kris Allen and released his first studio album in November 2009.

[edit] AMAs performance

In November 2009, there was some controversy and kerfluffling within fandom over Adam Lambert's performance at the AMAs. Some felt that members of fandom - specifically slash fandom - were criticizing Adam for being "too gay" and that this was hypocritical. There also seemed to be general annoyance over members of fandom who felt the need to criticize or be negative about Adam and that it was a way of harshing the squee of those who were fans of him.[19]
