[edit] Terminology

Below is a list of terms and their definitions that are used in this fan community.

MF, or Mind-fuck : A story that puts the characters through great psychic or psychological torment. Usually used to describe an episode like "Psychocrypt" or "Scarecrow" or a fanfic that deals with heavy mental brutality.

EWC, or Evil Writing Crew : A core group of fans that meet on the IRC Galaxy Rangers room to talk and write fanfic.

"The Slaverlord in the Corner" : A joke on the list says that it preys on lurkers as a way of encouraging new list members to speak up.

[edit] Ships

Galaxy Rangers is fairly unusual in that it has a rather "set" group of 'ships. In fact, it's very uncommon to see any romance fic outside of the following pairings.
Z/E - Zachary and Eliza Foxx
G/N - Shane "Goose" Gooseman and Niko
D/M - Walter "Doc" Hartford and Princess Maya of Tarkon

Zachary and Eliza were firmly established as a married couple at the start of the series. Goose and Niko had many instances where it could be read they had more than a friendly interest in one another ("Scarecrow" is cited by most shippers). Interestingly enough, Robert Mandell admitted in a 2005 interview that he planned to marry them off, and even had a graphic novel idea centered around Niko and Shane's daughter.

[edit] Fanon

Like many fandoms of action-adventure cartoons, GR fandom will play up the darker elements in the series. It was implied in several episodes (the Supertrooper Duology of "Supertroopers" and "Galaxy Stranger," "Mindnet," "Pychocrypt," "Changeling") that the Series 5 Rangers were considered dangerous rogues by the government that supported them. This is made much more blatant in the fanfic: in many stories, the Rangers fight Earth's enemies out in space but are still regarded with suspicion and hatred back on the Earth they protect. (This may be partly owing to the prevalence of X-Men fans in the EWC).
GR canon made it blatant that Goose was allowed to join the Rangers on the condition he hunt down and capture or kill his other "family"--the Supertroopers ("Galaxy Stranger"). In fanon, it's also speculated that telepaths and other psychics were once, or still are, persecuted, leaving Niko in a position of prejudice as well.

[edit] Other elements of fanon

Zachary:
Some stories portray Zachary's father as an abusive alcoholic whose example motivated Zachary to be a good and protective husband and father to his own family.
Zachary and Eliza are sometimes depicted as having married in their teens or barely past them.
He may have been the guard and escort of the alien ambassadors Waldo and Zozo before the pilot episode, "Phoenix."
He was captured by his nemesis, the Queen of the Crown, during the episode "Psychocrypt." Some fandom speculates that he wasn't immediately placed in the device, but tortured first.
He was assigned command of the "rogue" Series 5 team either because of his reputation as a "by the book" officer, because the higher-ups believed he could be controlled, or both.

Niko:

A commonly used, fanon "surname" for the character is "Dal'Ariel" (literally "Student of Ariel").

Shane:

Since he was able to send a telepathic message to Niko in "Changeling" and withstood the onslaught of a Poe Sensation Doll in "One Million Emotions," some fans have speculated he may be a low-level telepath or have some kind of psionic bond with Niko.

Walter:

Since his past was never firmly established in the series (aside from the facts that he is a Ph.D, and learned much at Miss Abercrombie's Charm School), his image in fanfic varies. Some depict him as a hacker who was caught breaking into BETA's computers and given a choice to work for them or serve jail time. Others, like Red Witch, paint him as a highly competent spy and assassin, his "charm school" being a training academy for Earth's wealthiest and best-placed families.

Almost all of the fandom establishes him as coming from a wealthy family. Fanon also defaults Doc's religion to Roman Catholic.
