[edit] Introduction

"alt.startrek.creative.erotica.moderated (ASCEM) is a moderated news group specifically dedicated to the lustful devotion to any and all Star Trek characters, the people who play those characters, and Star Trek technology and ideas. As such you must be of legal age to read material that is adult in nature (specified by the laws of the city/state/province/country in which you live) if you wish to participate in or simply read ASCEM. Although ASCEM is primarily devoted to the writing and discussion of works of erotic/pornographic Star Trek fan fiction (aka TrekSmut) of any kind from the mild to the kinky and everything in between, unlike its sister group alt.startrek.creative (ASC), ASCEM also welcomes threads regarding speculation on all things involving both Star Trek and sex.

We decided to go with a moderated news group because we were essentially chased off ASCE by sex-ad spam. While many of us still play an active role on ASC, we also feel the need for our own group. The moderator (Alexas) only filters out commercial spam, and inappropriate crossposts. Anything else can be and is posted to the group, either by posting through a news reader or the preferred way) by mailing your post to ascem@earthlink.com. Because many ISPs balk at carrying a newsgroup that has erotic content, there is also a mirror list called ASCEML. If you cannot access ASCEM, ask your ISP to add it; then, if they don't, send your name, e-mail addy, age, birthdate, and country of residence to our list-mom Anne and you will be subscribed.

BLTs, the mailing list run by Taffy that used to mail out all the stories posted to ASCE as well as stories posted strictly to the list still exists, but in a different form. Because of ASCEML, no stories posted to ASCEM will be sent out on BLTs unless the author sends them to Taffy. Taffy still mails out stories that are BLTs exclusives; usually these are stories that the author does not wish to post to USENET for various reasons."

[edit] Original Charter

"Alt.startrek.creative.erotica.moderated will be a group specifically dedicated to the lustful devotion to any and all Star Trek characters, the people who play those characters, technology, and ideas. More specifically, this group will be devoted to erotic Star Trek fan fiction ranging from mild to NC-17. Moderation will be handled by human moderators who will approve all posts except binaries, commercial spam, and messages that have been multiply crossposted."

[edit] Origins

ASCEM is the third version of the group. The first was alt.sex.fetish.startrek which was spammed to death. The second was alt.startrek.creative.erotica which was also spammed to death. Hence the creation of ASCEM.

[edit] History

[edit] 1997

"This is to inform the powers that be that discussion has been taking place outside of alt.config to create a new moderated newsgroup to replace the drowned-by-spam alt.startrek.creative.erotica. Most of ASCE's regular posters have de-camped to our parent group, alt.startrek.creative, and approximately 40% legitimate traffic on ASCE currently consists of lamenting the current state of the group and pleas to create a moderated group.

Alt.startrek.creative.treksmut will be a group specifically dedicated to the lustful devotion to any and all Star Trek characters, the people who play those characters, technology, and ideas. (This differs from our parent group, alt.startrek.creative, which is concerned only with the writing and discussion of fan fiction.) More specifically it will be devoted to erotic/pornographic/smutty/romantic Star Trek fan fiction (ranging from the mild to the XXX, with a little of everything in between)."

Source: Alexas' Original Proposal

There was a fair amount of discussion concerning what the new newsgroup should be called.

"The appropriate name for this group is alt.sex.stories.startrek, possibly alt.sex.stories.treksmut, but I think "treksmut" is a poor name.

Specifically, the "alt.startrek" second level hierarchy is a poor one, and should not exist. A possible appropriate location would be in alt.tv.startrek.creative.erotica, or alt.movies.startrek.creative.erotica."

Source: PROPOSAL: alt.startrek.creative.treksmut

"The name was chosen based on the fact that since we are an offshoot of the longstanding alt.startrek.creative, we felt that proximity to ASC and to our sister group, alt.startrek.creative.all-ages, on group lists would make ASCT easier to find for those who were acquainted with ASC or ASCE. "Treksmut" was our eventual choice to replace "erotica" in the old group name because it would be

1) easily identifiable to existing group members (especially the more than 300 who subscribe to the mailing list, BLTs--"Better Living through Treksmut"; and
2) reasonably self-explanatory to readers who simply were browsing group names while being obscure enough not to set off bells and whistles for adspammers doing searches for specific terms (like "sex", "adult", "erotica", etc.).
Source: Alexas' Reason for The Treksmut Designation

As for "treksmut", personally I still like alt.startrek.creative.erotica.moderated. Treksmut was chosen to avoid spammers from flooding the moderator's mailbox, but frankly, "smut" is a keyword and I think "moderated" would be more of a deterrent. However, if evreyone else is big on treksmut, treksmut it is. I don't think any of your proposed changes are appropriate, given the hierarchies that exist today and the way we feel we fit into them.

"Obviously I'm in favor of this. My reasons range from the strictly practical, the fact that asce is chock full o' spam, and alt.startrek.creative, although a great group in its own right, is not a proper substitute. Then there's the sentimental reasons; I met my wife and many of my friends on asce (in its two incarnations) and it's a fun place to be when you're not dodging ads for XXX NEKKID VIDEOS XXX. The very fact that there is still interest in creating a new group even after year of more spam than real postings on asce, certainly speaks to the dedication of its readers. So anyway, I think it's a good idea.

"As a writer of what is sometimes affectionately called slash Trek fanfic, I would appreciate the proposed Treksmut newsgroup. It would not only serve to expand the audience for erotic fanfic of all types, but encourage authors to write such fanfic as well."

Source: anneinchicago's Opinion

There was, of course, opposition to the creation of a new newsgroup.

"Please count me against setting up a moderated newsgroup. In the past it has been possible to make postings to alt.startrek.creative.erotica on any erotic or sexual practice. I do not believe that this will be possible on the proposed moderated group: however much people claim that they intend not to censor, but merely to eliminate spam, sooner or later a post will come along that they regard as "too disgusting", and it will be censored. I don't know when it will happen, and I don't know who will do it, but I know human nature... "

Source: PROPOSAL: alt.startrek.creative.treksmut

"Let us reassure Mr McNaughton yet again that the only posts to be refused will be

1)commercial spam,
2) binaries, and
3) multiple crossposts.

As for finding something "too disgusting", let me say that I have no intention of reading posts once I have ascertained that they do not fit one of the three critieria listed above. I'd venture to say that Alara doesn't read every story she archives (correct me if I'm wrong, Alara).
I imagine that when I have the "moderator hat" on, I'll want to get the job done as quickly as possible. Anything I wish to read will be read "on my own time", as it were. We will expect the same from any other moderators we "employ", and since I'll own the group's mailbox, I can make certain that all legitimate posts are approved.

"Ruth has asked me to serve as one of the arbiters; that is, if a post is rejected by the moderator, and the poster feels it should be posted anyway, I am one of the people the poster can protest to. My credentials as impartial arbiter can be observed by ftp'ing to the archive I maintain at aviary.share.net /pub/startrek/adult and looking up Tasteless Sarek Story, a repulsive piece of tripe that I archived because I believe it's my mandate to archive all stories, no matter how disgusting I find them. There's also one in there that nauseates me about Kira as Dukat's sex slave, and I archived that too."

Ruth's Year End ASCEM Test

"In the "emotional connection to the characters thread, Robin asked if I was giving a year end test to see who has been paying attention. Well, that made me think and I started this as a bit of a joke. Then I wondered if I could put something together based on what I know of ASCEM and see how many people know a *lot* about this ng, from its history, to its writers, and the reason for its existence. As I look at it now, this is actually a very hard test. You have to be pretty up on your TrekSmut to do the author recognition section, but that part was supposed to be hard."

[edit] Archive

"The Trekiverse Archive is an archive of Star Trek Fanfiction originally posted to the newsgroups alt.startrek.creative, its sub-groups alt.startrek.creative.all-ages, and alt.startrek.creative.erotica.moderated and occasional submissions. It was established back in 1991 as the Alt.StarTrek.Creative Archive and has been continuiously (sp.) maintained and updated (if sporatically (sp.)) ever since."

Source: Trekiverse

"Trekiverse is the official archive for this group as well as ASC, as designated over the years, succeeding the original Joseph Young archive at ftp.cis.ksu.edu, which was in turn succeeded by a succession of locations including ftp://aviary.share.net/pub/startrek/adult or http://aviary.share.net/~alara. run by Alara Rogers (who brought in the then alt.sex.fetish.startrek archive into the ASC one) with myself running the index, who handed it off to a team of Katie, Dina (current ASCEM Moderator), and me. Then Dina retired.

[edit] Golden O Awards

"The Golden Os are the annual Awards for this newsgroup, and are held in February. They comprise the stories posted within the prior calender year. They usually they occur in February before the ASC Awards on our sister group, alt.startrek.creative.

The GOs consist of the top 3 vote getters from all stories posted for various categories via the 5x2 rule. Further explanation on voting and categorization can be found in the FAQ."

Winners are usually announced with an Awards Dinner post.

"Section 7: History:

In 1997, the group alt.startrek.creative.erotica was created, moving the former alt.sex.fetish.startrek into the alt.startrek.creativehierarchy. (ASCE was later replaced with ASCEM, a moderated version.) As ASC had its ASC Awards for stories staring in 1995, the new group felt it would be wise for ASCE to have it's own awards. So Ruth Gifford started the Golden Orgasms, now often referred to simply as the Golden Os.
The intention of the Golden Os is to recognize those stories which have had the most impact on the readers in the calender year designated.
The Golden Os have been run under several Coordinators, starting with Ruth for the 1997 Awards. For the 1998 Awards, Ned Fox ran them. He started out the 1999 Awards, but unfortunately could not finish it, resulting in the ad-hoc Gang of Four finishing that Awards period. From 2000 to 2002, Mary Ellen ran the awards. In 2003, in absence of anyone stepping up, Stephen Ratliff, the ASC Awards founder and long time Golden Os Tech Support stepped up. In 2004 JM ran the awards. In 2005, Stephen stepped back up, with a delayed awards. He has remained in that position."

[edit] TSU: Treksmut University

"What TSU Is:

TSU is a virtual community (initialized by Jen Chapman, bless her heart) wherein the denizens of ASCEM(L) can hang out and get to know one another's screen personae (some better than others . . . ahem . . . Cam and Sophie for example). TSU is not a clique or a country club. Instead it is an organic community that only works because so many people have added their own unique ideas to the mix."

[edit] Pronouns and Gender-neutrality

Some posters to ASCEM preferred to be known by gender-neutral 'names' as well as be addressed by gender-neutral pronouns.

Mary Curtain, also known as 'Doc Science', suggested the use of the term 'sie', but the favored term was 'hir'.

For a while, it was common, when one was addressing someone whose gender either one did not know, or whom one knew did not want their gender made known or to be an issue, to address them as 'hir'.

Other terms were proposed, but 'hir' was the one that became the most common.

Some of the posters preferring the use of gender-neutral terminology were Jonk, Raku and Greywolf The Wanderer.

[edit] Askem Noone

The Askem Noone pen name began as a way for authors to post a story anonymously yet still receive and reply to feedback without having to worry about starting up and maintaining different email addresses. Also at the time there was a request for more outrageous treksmut to be posted so this seemed a good way to encourage it.

The name means "Ask No One"

What is the difference between a story posted anonymously and one posted under the Askem Noone pseudonym?

An anonymous poster is one who might want their identity hidden for a variety of reasons. Someone posting under Askem Noone would be posting because of the following, very specific, reasons -

"1. The story is written in a different style to the authors usual style and they didn't want preconceptions cluttering up the readers view of the story.
2. The story is totally outrageous and liable to attract flames, piss people off, shock, offend and/or start a flame war and the writer doesn't want the hassle of being associated with it.
3. The story is an experiment to see if an idea, theme, topic, style, tone, or pairing works.
4. The story pushes the boundaries of the Trek world and not just canon but fanfic canon too.
5. New writers keen to post their first Treksmut but want to test the waters first before putting their name to a "naughty" fanfic. There're other reasons obviously, but this is just to give you ideas."
Source: Askem Noone - Why and How It Started

There was some controversy as to the use of the Askem Noone pseudonym.

One poster commented:
We are adults here. We should be able to speak out our opinions, to take critics, to accept negative responses, to discuss thinks out in a mannerly way. If someone fears that s/he is [in my opinion] at the wrong place. I always thought that is a open-minded place with open-minded [people]. who do not have to fear to say aloud what they think. I, at least, handled things so, since I'm here. And I'm disappointed that others don't so, that such a behavior is even encouraged.

[edit] Tuppertrek

"Tuppertrek: [tuh-per-'trehk]

1) Extremely feminized slash Star Trek fan fiction, particularly Kirk/Spock.
2) Trek fan fic portraying gushy romance and often male pregnancy."

"Basically TupperTrek is K/S (although it could be any pair) where the guys are written as "cute little housewifeys" or, well, folks who might get excited throwing a Tupperware party. The current round of parodies of this awful type of story included my "A Printfan's Nightmare" and a bunch of others(I have no brain for titles).
Don't know if that makes sense.

[edit] Spackling

A story which attempts to fill in the plot-holes left open by an aired episode/canon.

"This term seems to have been coined in 1999 by Greywolf the Wanderer, when he posted his zine story "Dark Star" online with this summary: "I always loved The Enterprise Incident, but it's got plot holes ye could drive a logging truck thru. Consider this my best attempt to spackle the bastards."
