[edit] Introduction

Alvin and the Chipmunks was the brainchild of Ross Bagdasarian, Sr., whom under the stage name 'David Seville' recorded the novelty song "Witch Doctor", for the title character of the song he used a sped up verison of his own voice. On his next single, "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late), Bagdasarian as Seville debuted three singing chipmunks, Alvin, Simon and Theodore. The song's success lead it it win two Grammy awards and become a perrennial holiday favorite. In 1961, Bagdasarian created the animated "Alvin Show" which featured the Chipmunks, along with support segements featuring a wacky inventor called Clyde Crashcup. This series only lasted one season in prime time. After several years, The Chipmunks faded into obscurity and Bagdasarian died of a heart attack in 1972. In 1980, Bagasarian's son, Ross Bagasarian, Jr. and his wife Janice Karman revived the franchise with new albums, a new animated series which ran for 8 seasons, and several feature films.
