Angel Sanctuary (Tenshi Kinryoku) is a manga by Kaori Yuki. Compared to other fandoms, particularly within the larger anime fandom, the Angel Sanctuary fandom is small and generally comprised of adults and mature teenagers.

Below is a list of terms and their definitions that are used in this fan community.

AS - commonly used English abbreviation for Angel Sanctuary.
ASML - the Angel Sanctuary Mailing List.
Tenkin - abbreviation of the Japanese title, used more by Japanese fans than American fans.
AlexLuse - the name ascribed to the relationship between the Organic Angel Alexiel and Lucifer the Morningstar.
Setsara - the incestuous relationship between Mudou Setsuna and Mudou Sara, which is the driving relationship of the series.
Twincest - pertaining to incestuous relationships between twin siblings; Angel Sanctuary has many twin duos such as Alexiel and Rosiel, Lucifer and Michael, Metatron and Sandalphon or Astaroth and Astarte.

Below is a partial timeline of events in the Angel Sanctuary fan community.

In February, 1995, Angel Sanctuary debuted in Hana to Yume.

The Angel Sanctuary Mailing List formed to discuss the series, along with other Kaori Yuki works.[1]
In September 1997, the ASML began the Kaori Yuki Translation Project. [2]

The three-volume Angel Sanctuary OVA was released in Japan.
American interests in Angel Sanctuary grew as imported manga volumes and artbooks sold at animeconventions.
American fans shared fan-subtitled bootlegs of the OVA, further increasing interest in the manga. The bootlegs were commonly played at anime conventions.

In February, 2001, Angel Sanctuary ended its run in Hana to Yume.
June 27, 2001 was the date of the first FanFiction.Net submission of Angel Sanctuary fanfiction. [3]
Central Park Media licensed and released the OVA in English as one volume. There was no word on a possible release of the manga.

On September 3, 2002, the LiveJournal community angelsanctuary was founded.[4]

[edit] 2003

VIZ Media announced they had acquired the rights to the manga.[5]

[edit] 2004

In March, 2004, VIZ Media released the first English-language volume of the manga.
On November 21, 2004, the Angel Sanctuary icon LiveJournal community angelsancicons was created. [6]

On February 8, 2005, the Angel Sanctuary icon awards community angesiconawards was created. [7]
On July 18, 2005, the Angel Sanctuary claims LiveJournal community angelclaims was created. [8]

On March 27, 2006, the LiveJournal community angels_rating was created. [9]
On December 11, 2006, the Angel Sanctuary MSN group was founded.[10]

On January 1, 2007, the LiveJournal community 7musicalmusesv2 was created, and it hoped to include Angel Sanctuary among its fandoms.

The small size of the Angel Sanctuary fandom contributes to its relatively peaceful atmosphere, although the occasional debate erupts over interpretations of the series's challenging elements.

The Angel Sanctuary fandom has not produced as many largely-recognized fans as in other fandoms, and it has not attracted a mainstream audience. In general, fans of Angel Sanctuary tend towards these traits:

intelligence and/or maturity
progressive or liberal religious and political attitudes
open-mindedness towards controversial issues such as incest and same-sex marriage
interest in or tolerance of yaoi
interest in or tolerance of gothic subcultures and gothic manga
interest in detailed artwork (as opposed to cartoonish, simplified, or stylized artwork)

It currently has 777 fanfictions in Fanfiction.net (compared to Harry Potter which has around 275,000 or Inuyasha which has around 70,000.

As of April 12, 2008, 15 asylums and 175 people list "angel sanctuary" as an interest on InsaneJournal. [11] 45 people list "angel sanctuary" as an interest on JournalFen. [12]
