Angst, sometimes shortened to A, is a piece of fan fiction that is emotionally wrenching or a piece where a character deals with an emotionally distressing situation. This term is often used is the X-Files fandom. In certain fandoms, angst has a derogatory over tone as it compares to melodrama. In this context, this term is often used in the Harry Potter fandom. The use of the term predates 1997.

The following definition dates to February 1999 on cmshaw's Fan Glossary as specific to media fandom:

angst, n. Emotional pain. Often prized by fanfic authors for the intensity which it adds to a story, or simply for the masochistic thrill of it.
angst, header. Fanfic in which a character's emotional pain is a central plot element. [1]

The following definition dates to the Roswell fandom on June 27, 2001:

angst: antonym for foof, a dark story about a character's emotional suffering (adjective is angsty) [2]


The following term dates to December 2001 in the Harry Potter fandom:

Angst/Angstfic/Angsty: Description of fanfic or fanart—usually involving a high degree of angst. Angst implies putting fanfic characters through the wringer emotionally/physically/mentally and making the readers feel for them.[3]


The following definition dates to February 2002 in anime fandom:

Angst - Anxiety, fear, pain. This is the genre of Fanfiction wherein a character is hurt and injured or under goes deep depression.....usually, any kind of suffering that the fic author can dig up. [4]

The following definition dates to March 2002 in the Gundam Wing fandom:

angst: Refers to the emotional wounds suffered and/or borne by a character, especially if they spend pages moaning about their miserable life in great detail. Can add intensity to a story or turn it into one big long pityparty. Warning: angst can be addictive! [6]

Angst: Sad stuff, people getting their hearts broken and such. Usually very sad...[7]

The following definition dates to August 2003 in the Gundam Wing fandom:

Angst : Depression, torture (mental or otherwise), general bad feelings. [8]

The following definition dates to September 2003 in the Kingdom Hearts fandom:

Angst: Depressing, tortured-soul, emotional theme. [9]

Angst: O! Woe is me! Woe and thrice woe! (insert object of affections here) is straight/dead/married/ignoring me/part of a left wing conspiracy! Thus is most of the plot of Angst. [10]

Angst - The fanfic contains sad, depressing themes or unresolved, uncomfortable emotional events. [12]


The following definition dates to May 2005 in the slash, Westlife, and Lord of the Rings fandoms:

Angst - In an angst story one or more characters are in a very stressful or deeply emotional situation. Often include scenes where the character is deeply depressed, and this characters depression is the main element of the story. [13]

angst (ängkst) - Used to describe a story which contains insecurity, misery or other depressing elements. [15]
