[edit] Fan Fiction
The Anne Rice fan fiction community has operated in a weird place for a number of years because of the decisions of the source material, Anne Rice. The fandom did not start out with that issue though. By 1994, they were on-line and posting to Usenet. One example from this year, demonstrating their on-line presence, was "Birds of a Feather" by Cliff Chen. This story was posted in August and was an X-Files/ Anne Rice crossover.
In 1999, Anne Rice threatened a number of fans with legal action. This was followed up with cease and desist letters being sent to fan fiction sites and, in 2000, a personal statement being published on her website saying that she was hurt by people writing fan fiction based on materials. This all culminated in 2001 with FanFiction.Net recieving a cease and desist letter.
Despite the legal challenges, the fandom was still around and kicking in 2003. It was cited in an article for the student newspaper at Montgomery Blair High School.
