[edit] Introduction

Influencal French comic strip created by writer, Rene Goscinny and artist, Albert Uderzo in the late 1950s.

[edit] The Comic and Canon

The comic tells the story of Asterix, a small but quick-thinking warrior from a tribe in Gaul (Anicent France). The stories are set after the Gallic Wars (c. 50 BC) when Julius Caesar and his army had invaded and conquered most of Gaul and made it part of the Roman Empire. Luckily for Asterix's tribe they have a magic potion that makes them super-powerful. Asterix has all sorts of exciting adventures in his world with his large, but lovable sidekick, Obelix.

In 1977, at the height of the series popularity, Rene Goscinny suddenly died at the age of 51. Albert Uderzo, decided to continue the series on his own, taking over as both sole writer and aritist for the series. Many fans avoid these later comics, due to the fact that they lack Goscinny's wit and the fact that as Uderzo got older, the comics began to lose their quality.

Elseware, the Gallic warrior and his friends have appeared in a number of feature films, several animated and three big budget live-action films which co-star the famous French actor, Gérard Depardieu in the role of Obelix. Also, Asterix has his own amusement park, several video games, and for a while replaced a certain clown as the French mascot of a popular American fast-food chain.
