[edit] Historical Definitions
The following term dates to December 2001 in the Harry Potter fandom:
- Avatar: Another name for that dreaded creature, "Mary Sue". Like its original meaning, an avatar is an extension of the almighty fanfiction author in his/her/its story.[1]
The following definition is from the MST community and dates to June 2005:
- Avatar - see Self-Insert [2]
The following definition is from GAFF and dates to December 2006:
- Avatar: On message boards, an avatar is the picture which appears with a poster’s name. More generically, it is a character which represents a person online. Self Insert characters may be referred to by this term. [3]
The following definition dates to 2008 in the Superman fandom:
- Avatar - Closely related to a Mary Sue, but this is a character which is the actual author inserted into the fandom. For instance, if I write for the character Joy at the Bakery, who *is* me, but leaves to explore Metropolis, this is an avatar. It is basically a vehicle for the author to really, truly play in the fandom. [4]
