Shipping wars

As with many fandoms, the most significant kerfuffle in the fandom is over shipping. There is an ongoing "war" between those who ship Kataang and those who ship Zutara, with tremendous animosity on both sides.[citation needed]

As of season three, Maiko shippers joined the fray.[citation needed]

The movie casting kerfluffle

On December 9, 2008, news hit the internet that director M. Night Shyamalan had found his cast for the live-action movie adaption of Avatar.[55] When a first-look at the actors versus the characters was posted,[56] fan reaction in general was extremely negative. None of the main characters were to be portrayed by Asian actors, a fact which upset many fans of the series greatly as it was seen as racist and an insult to the series, which had diligently worked to present an Asian-based mythology for the show to Western audiences.[57],[58],[59],[60],[61],[62],[63],[64],[65],[66]

The problems with the movie casting continued into early 2009. First on January 15, 2009, actor Jackson Rathbone was interviewed about his participation in the project and made the unfortunate remark ""I think it's one of those things where I pull my hair up, shave the sides, and I definitely need a tan."[67] Fandom reacted strongly against this dismissal of the concerns over the casting and compared it to putting actors in blackface.[68] News also broke of a casting call for extras for the film taking place in Philadelphia on January 24, 2009, encouraging auditioners to show up in "traditional cultural ethnic attire"; that is: "If you're Korean, wear a kimono. If you're from Belgium, wear lederhosen."[69] Many were quick to point out that neither of these actuall were traditional attire for either nationality.[70] and a protest was organized to be staged at the casting call by members of aang_aint_white.[71]

There have been a number of conventions dedicated to, selling merchandise related to, screening or having panels dedicated to Avatar: The Last Airbender. These conventions include San Diego 2005 Comic Convention [72], the 2007 The New York Anime Festival, and the 2008 New York Comic Con.
