The following definition dates to the Roswell fandom on June 27, 2001:

BDSM: bondage, discipline, sadomasochism, stuff that may ick you [1]


The following term dates to December 2001 in the Harry Potter fandom:

BDSM: Acronym for Bondage Dominance, Sado-Masochism. Sex/relationships involving sexual slavery, master/slave relationships, sadism and masochism as foreplay, bondage games, kink and fetish. Will usually involve leather, whips and chains. [2]


The following definition dates to September 2003 in the Kingdom Hearts fandom:

BDSM: Bondage, discipline, sado-masochism. [3]

The following term dates to 2005 in the Lord of the Rings fandom:

BDSM - Sex involving bondage, domination, and/or sado-masochism. NOT Vanilla.[4]


The following definition dates to May 2005 in the slash, Westlife, and Lord of the Rings fandoms:

bdsm, BDSM - Contains elements of b&d, d&s and/or s&m [Bondage, Discipline, Dominance, Submission, Sadism, Masochism]. [5]

The following definition dates to September 2006 in anime fandom:

BDSM - bondage/sado-masochism. [6]


The following definition dates to May 2008 in media fandom:

BDSM (or B/D, D/s, S/M) = Bondage Domination Sadism Masochism -- refers to the presence of bondage, dominance/submission, and/or sado-masochism for sexual or violence purposes. May be mild (PG-13) to extreme (NC-17). This is a frequent squick for many people, so should always be listed in the author's warnings. See also: 'Bondage' [7]

In June 2009, it was argued that there is the perception that some people use the terms non con and BDSM interchangeably. This causes confusion in fandom, especially in terms of discussions about triggers. [8]
