Babies
From Fan History Wiki
Babies frequently make appearance in fan fiction as original characters. Their appearance has tended to be, historically, for one of two plot reasons:
- Couple procreates or adopts, baby signals continued commitment to each other; and
- Plot devise to bring a couple together.

[edit] CSI
Almost any couple on CSI can have children, helped along because Catherine Willows is canonically a parent. mpreg is not as present in this fandom as other fandoms because the show is set in a context where that would not be realistic. Instead, if two male characters have a baby, it comes about through adoption or events in their past. This happens occassionally for pairings like Nick/Greg. The most popular pairings for babies to appear in are Grissom/Sara, Nick/Sara and Catherine/Warrick. Babies making an appearance in femslash is a rarity.
[edit] Harry Potter
The Harry Potter fan fiction community tends to not deal much with babies in the present timeline for most heterosexual pairings. Characters like Ron and Hermione might have children but only after they age to a time when they can give consent. In that case, the babies don't tend act as plot devises to bring characters together but to show a committment as a couple, in a pre-existing relationship. The reader is generally left to understand that the pair is a given for the story, with out a back story needing to be established.
The exception to that is the Snape/Harry (Snarry) pairing. This pairing is frequently the subject of mpreg. It is frequently used in humor stories.
[edit] Star Trek
In Star Trek: The Original Series, the couple most likely to have a baby was Spock/Chapel. This concept of their procreation was present originally in zines and continued on the Internet, being popularized by such authors as Ronda Sexton.
[edit] Star Trek: Voyager
The most popular pairings for babies in Star Trek: Voyager are Janeway/Chakotay, Paris/Torres and Chakotay/Paris. Janeway/Chakotay and Paris/Torres are the two most popular pairings for the show as a whole and with the addition of Paris/Torres canonically having children, it helped fuel this desire to write them with babies. The Star Trek fandom has also been traditionally one of conservative values of its members. Given that, it is not surprising that babies would be written as an expression of love for pairings that many wanted to see become canon.
Chakotay/Paris is the major m/m slash pairing. When they couple is pregnant, it tends to be a result of mpreg. The story may or may not be humor. This contrasts to f/f slash pairings like Janeway/7 where the characters generally have a medical procedure which results in the child sharing both mothers' dna.
