Bodyswap
From Fan History Wiki
According to Wikipedia, Bodyswap is " a storytelling device seen in a variety of fiction, most often in TV shows and movies, in which two people (or beings) exchange minds and end up in each others' bodies. Alternatively, their minds may stay where they are as their bodies adjust. The two people usually keep their voices in cartoons too, for purposes of knowing who's who." [1]
The popularity of this kind of story is because it allows the switched characters to "learn something about each other" through the process, from having to live as the other person and experiencing life from their point-of-view. It can be a set-up for a relationship fic, or just a genfic, where, oftentimes, the switched characters have had some conflict in the past and the swap serves to help them resolve it.
