[edit] Introduction
Brimstone fandom began quickly after the series first aired on Fox in 1998 and 1999. The series only ran for 13 episodes before being canceled, largely due to the fact that executive changes at Fox around the time first aired resulted in the individuals who had been in support of the show leaving, replaced with executives who did not put network support behind it. Episodes were aired out of sequence, creating confusion in the series' timeline and alienating viewers before it could develop a strong following. It was also viewed as "too dark" for network television by many, who did not give the series a chance to see the dark humor in it (largely provided by John Glover's portrayal of the devil).
Nevertheless, the series has been aired later on the SciFi Network and Chiller Network, where it gained a greater audience and a continued cult following. Never a particularly large fandom, it still has a dedicated fanbase, in particular around the slash pairing of Ezekiel Stone and the devil. This fandom has produced fanworks including fiction, art, fansites, songvids, and virtual seasons.
[edit] The series
In Brimstone, Peter Horton plays Ezekiel Stone, a New York City police detective. Fifteen years before the beginning of the series, he avenged the rape of his wife, Rosalyn Stone (Stacy Haiduk), by murdering her rapist in cold blood. Soon thereafter, Ezekiel himself is killed in the line of duty and sent to Hell for his actions.
But now, the unthinkable has happened: 113 damned souls have managed to escape from Hell and have returned to Earth. Their escape has not made the Devil (John Glover) very happy. He approached Ezekiel with an offer: return all 113 to their rightful place in Hell, and earn a second chance at life. Ezekiel accepts this offer, and the series follows his attempts to capture the 113 while struggling with his own redemption.
Other recurring characters in the series include:
- Maxine (or Max) (Lori Petty), a receptionist at the hotel where Ezekiel lives when he moves to Los Angeles in search of his wife and the damned.
- Detective Ash (Teri Polo), a detective in Los Angeles who crosses paths repeatedly with Ezekiel during his hunt - and who may be more than she seems at first glance.
