[edit] Introduction
Chlark is the fan-made name for pairing of Chloe Sullivan and Clark Kent from the show Smallville.
Chloe Sullivan is the spunky best friend of the hero in Smallville, Clark Kent. She aspires to be a journalist for the Daily Planet in Metropolis. Some of her promoninent quirks in the series is her addiction to coffee and the obsession with the weird and unexplainable. Clark Kent is her opposite, he is a small town boy. As he is an alien, human drugs have no effect on him, as such bitter brews adored by his friend have no effect on him. Also, as Clark is uncomfortable with the fact that he is an alien, he doesn't feel at home on Earth nor does he feel that he would be accepted into society were his secret to get out. Because of this fear Clark tends to prefer the normal as opposed to Chloe.
Though the two are opposites, they had chemistry that fans quickly latched onto and dubbed it "Chlark", taking the first two letters of Chloe's name and the last three letters of Clark's name.
Unfortunately, so far in the series the only time Chloe and Clark have dated was for a brief time between season one and season two, from the season finale of season one to the break up in the beginning of season two. This is because of Clark's love for "the girl next door" Lana Lang.
Dispite Clark's obvious affection for Lana, Chlark fans still maintained hope because of how the comicbook reality [note that some refer to the comicbook reality as the 'real' or 'orginal' reality] placed the Clark and Lana relationship as Clark's highschool crush. Chlark fans remained hopefully through the "Chlois Theory".
Unlike most fan dubbed names, the term Chlois does not refer to a relationship between two characters. Rather the Chlois theory described critics' and fans' ideology that Chloe was in fact Lois Lane, Superman's dream woman in the comicbook and movie realities. The similarites between the two were strikingly obvious. Chloe, while a completely orginal character made specifically for the series, was an aspiring Daily Planet journalist. The Daily Planet was where Lois Lane was to work in her life. Chloe was oblivious to Clark's apparent use of his numerous abilities, which was drawn parallel to Lois Lane's inability to see that her partner Clark Kent was Superman.
Fans were not dismayed by the abundant critisms that Chloe could not be Lois Lane for the very fact of her affinity to Clark. Lois Lane in comicbook series was never quite affectionate to Clark but rather Superman. Because of Chloe's lack of knowledge of Clark's powers, critics said that the "Chlois Theory" was simply wishful thinking on the Chlark fans' part. Unfortunately in the fourth season of the series, Chloe's cousin was introduced. The Smallville Lois Lane was introduced, quieting many Chlark fans who supported the "Chlois Theory", though many still believe that Chloe is the real Lois, while Lois is the real Chloe.
However later in Season 4, thanks to Alicia Baker Chloe finds out about Clark's secret abilities. She keeps it to herself until she was transported to the Fortress of Solitude in the Season 5 premiere, in which she reveals to Clark she knows about his abilities. Clark then confesses to her about being an alien.
Chlark fans though still have hope that the relationship will come to be through the closeness between the two characters. Especially when Clark's abilities were revealed to Chloe. Many say that because the TV series has it's own reality that the writers for Smallville may yet decide that the Smallville reality may include a Chlark ending.
As the Chlark fans remain patient, they await every season for the annual "Chlark Kiss". Though the characters have never been officially together in the series, each season they characters find some way to lock lips. And, much to Chlark fans excitement, the kisses are all heated.
