Introduction

Video game published in 1994 by some of the same people as the publishers of the award-winning "Civilization" two years before. Open source free imitation "FreeCol" created starting in 2003. Commercial version reworked as "Civilization IV: Colonization" in about 2008.

The Game

You start in 1492 as an emissary of a European power, with a ship holding a couple of colonist units somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean or the ocean east of a made-up world. You land, meet natives and other Europeans, build a colony, work the surrounding land, sell produce to the natives or back in Europe, build more colonies, buy or build more ships and armaments and tools, attract or create or capture more colonists. Eventually you declare independence and fight off the king's forces.
