Crack!Fic

Crack!fic is a term used in several connotations in regards to Fan fiction. Most often it is used to refer to plot or premise ideas that are so far out the author had to have been on the drug Crack to have come up with them. In other uses, it is meant to refer to Fan fiction that for various reasons (poor plotting, poor execution, excessively silly or OOC, that readers are almost embarrassed to say they are reading whatever story or series they have become addicted to like a crack addict. "A fanfic whose concept is so out there, one wonders what the author was snorting when they wrote. Sometimes deliberate, sometimes just WTF?" [1]
The term is used as both derogatory and affectionate.

The following definition dates to 2005 in anime fandom:
- Crack!fic
- (n.) Fan fiction genre or type: A story that is often very unbelievable, wild, weird, extremely silly, stupid, or nonsensical; often in an attempt to be humorous.
- Often so strange that it makes you wonder if the author wasn’t high or drunk at the time they wrote the story.
- Also written “crackfic” [2]
The following definition dates to November 2006 in the Harry Potter fandom.
- Crackfic
- Crazy, often pointless fanfic, written solely to entertain; its plot usually makes little sense to anyone who (unlike the author) isn't hyper when faced with the story. [3]
The following definition dates to May 2008 in media fandom:
- Crackfic -- refers to stories in which completely ridiculous, unbelievable or inexplicable things occur. Are generally written shamelessly and with no excuse beyond a desire to have fun. Often are also PWPs, though not always NC17. Are almost always humourous, although it is possible to write them seriously. See also: 'Humour' and 'PWP' [4]
