[edit] Terminology

Below is a list of terms and their definitions that are used in this fan community.

Amethyst Ocean: Name coined for the relationship between Danny and Sam. Most popular het pairing. Reference to each character's eye color.

Gray Ghost: Name coined for the relationship between Danny and Valerie. Also a popular het pairing. Reference to Valerie's surname and Danny's ghost form (which Valerie hates).

Shallow Sapphire: Name coined for the relationship between Danny and Paulina. Reference to her personality traits and eye color.

Pitch Pearl: Name coined for relationship between Danny Fention and Danny Phantom (assuming each identity could become its own entity). Most popular slash pairing. Reference to the 'pitch black' color of Fenton's hair or Phantom's suit, and the 'pearly white' color of Phantom's hair or Fenton's clothing.

Dan Phantom/Dark Danny/Ultimate Danny/Dan Plasmius/Phantom: Due to "The Ultimate Enemy"'s failure to differentiate between the future, evil Danny, and the 14-year-old Danny, fans have felt a need to create various names in order to clarify which Danny they refer to in discussions of fanfiction. There is no general consensus on what to call him in the fandom.

Halfa: Though only used in one episode of the series, has become a common term to refer to the half-ghost state of characters such as Danny Fenton, Vlad Masters, and Danielle Masters.

Halfa-Sue: In fanfiction, a play on the concept of a Mary-Sue; an original character that by chance becomes a half-ghost, or 'halfa', and proceeds to take on the role of a Mary Sue by becoming the main or central character of the story.

Anti-Fan: Term used by portion of fandom to refer to fans of slash fan works after creator Butch Hartman expressed dislike. Used as a derogatory term to suggest that these fans were only interested in the show to fulfill a fetish and had no real respect for Hartman.

True-Fan: Term used by portion of fandom to refer to fans who refrained from participating in slash after Hartman's announcement. Most extreme 'True-Fans' were known to engage in heated arguments and insult attacks with more extreme Anti-Fans.

Real-Fans: Term popularized by deviantART community DPRealFans in response to the Fan War, used by portion of fandom that refused to engage in harrassing slash fans or slash insulters in favor of letting fans prefer what they chose to prefer. Many 'Real-Fans' were often accused of being Anti-Fans merely for sympathizing with 'Anti-Fans'

Fan War: An extended period of time following an announcement by Butch Hartman on his forums where slash fans, friends of slash fans, and even several Danny/OC shippers were attacked by extreme 'True-Fans' and likewise retaliated with equal ferocity. Well known in the fandom for its surprisingly long duration and encompassment of every fan community.

According to Firefury Amahira in a June 26, 2007 comment on fanthropology:

I would suggest keeping on eye on the Danny Phantom fandom in the next year. It's had an unusually high amount of fandom infighting so it's extremely polarized between a pro-canon extreme, a deviant extreme, and a lot of "I just want to enjoy it, kthx" moderates; and the canon is just ending. (The US hasn't gotten the final episodes yet, but several parts of the world have.) It could be a good opportunity to observe a fandom transitioning from an open-canon to a closed-canon. [31]
