[edit] Conventions

Members of the fandom were known to, according to a LiveJournal comment, fake illnesses in order to get to the front of autograph lines at Dark Shadows conventions.

[edit] Fan Fiction

The Dark Shadows fan fiction community was a small, tight knit community. It had several long term members of the Star Trek fandom as part of it. These fen contributed to the shape and scope of the various fannish activities in the community's early days. By 1975, the community had enough support to put together a fandom only convention. This convention was ShadowCon. It was the first national Dark Shadows convention and was organized by fans of the show. The community was still actively producing fanzines. In 1979, the fanzine, Shadowgram started publication. It was one of a number of actively published zines this year. In 1980, the World Federation of Dark Shadows Club, now the Dark Shadows Official Fan Club, was founded.

During the 1980s, multi-fandom fandom zines were circulating. If a fan wanted to read a story from their particular fandom, they may well have to read the story in a zine that contained stories outside their fandom. According to Langley, this would often gateway fans into other communities, creating in them an interest that would lead them to seek out the source material. This would help a number of fandoms including Battlestar Galactica, Blake's 7, Dark Shadows, Doctor Who, Man from UNCLE, Star Trek, Star Wars and others.

On August 26, 2004, the LiveJournal fan fiction community dsfanfics was created. [3]
