On May 8, 1972, Darren Hayes was born. [1]

Savage Garden was an Australian pop band that started in 1996, made up of two men (Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones), who enjoyed worldwide commercial success until their break up in 2001.

Below is a list of terms and their definitions that are used in this fan fiction community.


Dozer: An early nickname of Darren's.

Daz: Commonly used nickname of Darren Hayes (apparently not liked by Darren, however)

Darksider: A fan who prefers Darren more than Daniel

Vanilla fans - fans who are into "normal" fan activities (reading articles, collecting pictures, writing het fanfiction)

Slash fans - fans who prefer and support homosexual fiction, and gay erotic fiction in the Darren Hayes fandom

D/Ders - fan who enjoy stories which refer to the relationship between Darren and his ex-band partner, Daniel Jones

D/Rers - fans who enjoy stories which refer to the relationship between Darren and his husband, Richard Cullen

Solo Darren-ers - fans who enjoy stories which refer to either Darren's solo career i.e. Spin, TT&S 2001-2005, or to his presumed casual relationships while single.

Nightingale: A term of affection used by Darren's fans.

Romantica: Stories which have both romantic and erotic content, which represents the most pervasic genre found in Darren Hayes fan fiction

Re-union fics: A significant number of Savage Garden fans who had hoped that Darren would re-unite musically with his ex-band partner, Daniel Jones, enjoy reading or writing stories which portray the men returning to a professional and/or personal relationship.

RPF: Short for "Real Person Fiction". Darren Hayes has not issued a public statement on the use of his name in real-person fiction to date. On this basis, his fiction-writing fandom has presumed his tolerance to it.

Darren Hayes community: A large number of Darren Hayes' fans have befriended him online at MySpace. Prior to that, and for a number of years, many of his fans networked among themselves, through such vehicles as his fan club, and including his broad-based, but now-defunct Street Teams. His fans have tended to be repeat concert-goers and sustained a long-term interest in him. There are numerous forums, message boards, and persisting fan fiction sites that have evolved from this interactivity.

Fluff: A popular genre within the fandom which affectionately portray Darren Hayes as unassuming, dorky, funny and loveable.

Mpreg: A type of story which features Darren as capable of being pregnant and may involve him giving birth to his own child.

AU: A type of story which transcends time, place and possibility, such as rewriting into a historical, science fiction, vampyric or fantasy genre. Found frequently within the fandom.

Angst fics: Fics containing strong dramatic themes

Dark, or "Mature Readers only" fics: Fics containing such themes as illness, death, suicide, divorce, violence, drug-use, non-consensual sex and other events which are not recommended for impressionable or young readers, and are traditionally prefaced with strong warnings and disclaimers. Also commonly found within the fandom.
