Michela Ecks e-mailed David Drake and asked him what his policy regarding fan fiction was and he was kind enough to reply. To summarize his policy, he doesn't have an official one but he asks that writers not write fan fiction based on his stories because he paid a lot for that background. Below is an extract from that e-mail that Michela Ecks recieved on March 26, 2001:
- DAD: I feel uncomfortable having people do fanfic from my stories. It's only happened to me with the Hammer stuff, and that--now that you make me think about is--is more than fiction to me. I paid a great deal for that background. I ask people please not to do that to me.
