Deathfic

Deathfic is a piece where most of the characters die in a horrible and grotesque fashion. After the death of the characters, the piece tends to focus on the ramifications of their deaths. This term is used in the Anime and CSI fandoms.

The use of this term predates 1998.

The following definition dates to 1997 in the Galaxy Rangers fandom:
- Death Stories (or "wallows") - Common in X-files fanfic, this story involves one of the charaters perishing, and the others' reaction.
- GR Universe example: Doc is killed in the line of duty. The rest of the story focus is on the other Rangers coming to grips with their loss.[1]
The following definition dates to the Roswell fandom on June 27, 2001:
- deathfic: fic involving a main character's death [2]
The following definition dates to February 2002 in anime fandom:
- Death fic - judging by the name, death fics contain...well, DEATH! A character dies....suicide, accident, again, and means of death the fic author can dig up. [3]
The following definition dates to August 2003 in the Gundam Wing fandom:
- Death/Deathfic: Pretty self explanitory. A person's death is usually the center of the plot[4]
The following definition dates to September 2003 in the Kingdom Hearts fandom:
- Deathfic: Yup. Exactly what it sounds like. Killing off a main charrie or two. [5]
The following definition dates to May 2004 in the Harry Potter, Horatio Hornblower and Pirates of the Caribbean fandoms:
- Deathfic:
- an AU fic in which a canon character dies when, in canon, they didn’t.[6]
The following definition dates to September 2005 in the Stargate fandom:
- Death Stories:
- A story in which one or more of the lead characters (Jack, Sam, Daniel, Teal'c) dies.[7]
The following definition dates to 2008 in the Superman fandom:
- Deathfic - A fan fiction which centers around the death of a character. This usually is a fiction about how the other characters cope with the loss.[8]
The following definition was provided in the July/August 2008 edition of the Literary Review of Canada:

The following definition dates to May 2008 in media fandom:
- Death (-fic or -Story) -- refers to stories in which a major or minor canon character dies. This is a frequent squick for many people, so should always be listed in the author's warnings. (If possible, that is. Admittedly, sometimes the nature of deathfics are best kept secret, so that nothing detracts from the power of the emotional impact upon revelation.) [10]
