[edit] Introduction

Doom is often regarded as one of the most influential video games of all time. Released in late 1993, it popularized the First-Person Shooter genre and was among the first games to openly encourage user-created content.
Custom game content was the primary creative outlet for Doom fans, while relatively little traditional fanart or fanfiction ever appeared. Anyone could freely download appropriate editor software and create and distribute new in-game experiences. Doom itself was built on the philosophy that for action games, story and plot should take a back seat to action and visceral experience. Survival-horror encounters and graphically-immersive environments were emphasized far more than the extremely thin, rudimentary back-story. Fandom reflected this philosophy in that only a small amount of fanart or fanfiction was created in comparison with the amount of fan-created in-game experiences.
