Harry/Draco

[edit] Introduction
Harry/Draco is a pairing of Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy from the [[Harry Potter}] books/films.
The Harry/Draco ship often raises eyebrows amongst lovers of canon and non-slash ships. But for those readers with an open mind, it is quite easy to become entranced with the possibilities that open up when the Hero of the Wizarding World falls for the poster child for purebloods. Although ostensibly a very unconventional ship, it is statisically among the most popular fanfiction pairings for the Harry Potter fandom [1]. Writers of Harry/Draco fanfiction do tend to stick very closely to the character's canon behaviour, as the clashes between the two very different characters underline the potential behind the old adage that 'opposites attract'. However, generally an analyst who does *not* have a desperate desire to see Harry/Draco together will most likely find several flaws in their characterization in the average fic.
[edit] Terminology
Below is a list of terms and their definitions that are used in this fan fiction community.
[edit] Non-English Fandoms
The Harry/Draco pairing is popular in several non-English speaking communities. This includes Hebrew and German. Doujinshi, fanfiction that takes the form of manga, with a Harry/Draco pairing is popular in Japan.

The German speaking Harry/Draco fandom is located at several sites including FanFiction.Net and at Übersicht über alle Animexx-Zirkel's Harry/Draco forum. [2] Members of the German speaking community include Alecandra, Arkanium, dracona, Eisnebel, Isinuyasha, and Sarenka.
[edit] Timeline of the Harry/Draco pairing in fandom
Below is a partial timeline of events that took place in this fan fiction community.
[edit] 2000
- On September 15, 2000, Cassandra Claire made her first post to HPforGrownups. [3] That same day, Cassandra Claire left feedback for Al, author of the popular Harry/Draco Snitch story. [4][5] This feedback leaving is important as it goes to demonstrate the climate in that part of the Harry Potter fan fiction community at that time. An author would leave another author feedback. The author receiving the feedback would then return the favor and leave feedback in kind. [6] It was a feedback reciprocity system and it worked to help make fans bigger names. Cassandra Claire also publicly praised these authors in various circles. Those authors would leave feedback and praise of Cassandra Claire in kind. This helped to endear Cassandra Claire to others because most fans like such public praise. It helped to make Cassandra Claire more well known. Helping along this process was Heidi8, who, while publicly praising other authors, would most loudly and consistently praise Cassandra Claire. Heidi8 was Cassandra Claire's second biggest supporter in this early period of Cassandra Claire's writing. The biggest supporter though was Cassandra Claire herself who was actively promoting herself on several mailing lists, including ParadigmOfUncertainty where she plugged her story on September 22, 2000. [7] Cassandra Claire's leaving of feedback for Al [8] is also important because it signals the start of her trip to the realm of slash.
- December 2000 ended with Cassandra Claire implying on HP_FanFiction that her story might become a slash story. [9] The following extract gives that clue:
- * Cassie ponders about where to fit a / into DS.* My favorite pairing
- after Harry/Draco (which I really can't make work) is Remus/Sirius,
- and Sirius needs to marry Narcissa so H&D can stay related, and
- anyway, Remus has been turned, possibly permanently, into a big wolf.
- That leaves Ron, I guess, available for.....um.....well, we'll see.
- grins* The Ron/Draco knife-throwing scene I believe started out as a
- response to the Teenage Witches who asked for a scene with Ron and
- Draco where Draco starts taking off his clothes. They tend to ask for
- peculiar things, but then they are peculiar people. ;)[10]
[edit] 2001
- During early to mid 2001, Rhysenn was one of the most popular Harry/Draco writers in the Harry Potter fandom. This is evident by the amount of awards Rhysenn won that year for the HP Slash Awards. [11]
- Sarvihaara founded the glassesreflect mailing list on November 6, 2001, devoted to James slash and Harry slash, and would go on to found the Potter Slash Archive (PSA). [12] This list had a membership larger than WhenIKissedTheTeacher. (White_Serpent: [13]) This mailing list, too, would become one of the largest in Harry Potter fandom. [14] Because PSA accepted Harry slash, its archive would eventually be dominated by Harry/Draco stories written by members of the Inner Circle, including Cassandra Claire, Aja, and IvyBlossom.
