Introduction
Draco/Hermione is the relationship between Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter books. This ship has the largest amount of fics and supporters on Fanfiction.net[1] on 04/12/2007. It is considered by some to be a difficult relationship to write in the Harry Potter Fandom, since Draco Malfoy is prejudiced against Muggle-borns and Hermione is a muggle-born. However, like fans of other "Rival ships" (such as Draco/Harry, Snape/Hermione, or Snape/Harry), its fans enjoy writing about opposing, contrasting characters falling in love.
Terminology
Below is a list of terms and their definitions that are used in the D/Hr fan community.
- D/Hr: Stands for Draco/Hermione. A piece labeled D/Hr concentrates on the pairing of Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger.
- Dramione the nickname for the Draco/Hermione fandom, created from the characters' names. The term was started by hobbitheart at the Fiction Alley forums.[2]
- DHR stands for Draco Hermione Romance.
- Leather Librarians the first nickname for Draco/Hermione shippers, due to Hermione's love for books and the leather pants Draco wore in the Draco Trilogy. Draco wearing leather became part of fandom's stereotypical Sexgod!Draco. Though it was often intended to be a slight parody (Rebirth of Lucifer and Diary of a Rockstar for example), it was however to be taken seriously by other writers. The library became a common meeting place in D/Hr fics. Hermione is there, Ron and Harry prefer avoid it, and there's a maze of book shelves to hide in. Some authors included rooms for further piravcy.
- S.S. Leather and Libraries is the name the ship is commonly referred to as. The names Leather and Libraries and Leather Librarians originate from the Fiction Alley forums. It is also used at FanForum, unlike many other ships which have two different names - depending on the forum.
Tropes
Below is a list of common tropes in Draco/Hermione fanfiction. A long list of common themes in D/Hr fanfiction, can be found here.
- In pre-Deathly Hallows fanfiction, Draco and Hermione were sometimes made Head Boy and Head Girl, often with adjoining or shared bedrooms, and especially a shared bathroom. This would lead to romantic-comedy situations and eventual romance.
- Subversion of the Snape/Hermione Marriage Law Challenge: in some fics the Ministry for Magic would decree that all Purebloods must marry Muggleborns in order to preserve the wizarding race. Due to some kind of circumstance (either through the law or Hermione's stubbornnness), Hermione would be forced to marry Draco, leading to eventual romance.
- In some fanfiction, generally dystopic futures after Voldemort won the war, Draco would be forced to claim Hermione as his concubine in order to keep her from being given as a slave to someone who would rape and torture her, leading to eventual romance.

Influential Fanworks
Novel Length
- Basketcase by Attica "Is that really what makes you happy? Because I find that quite sad, relying on the failures of other people for your sick amusement when you can just look in the mirror every day and see the biggest failure in the world." Oooh, BURN.
- Draco: Phoenix Rising by Cheryl Dyson Shortly after Dumbledore's death, Draco ponders his fate and begins to question the Dark Lord's wishes. It is a gripping tale of the turmoils and changes in the life of Draco Malfoy and ties in quite well with the events of the seventh year
- We Learned the Sea by Luckie1 Draco Malfoy turns himself in after a very successful career as a Death Eater, then enlists Harry and Hermione to help him in a scheme to bring down the Dark Lord. A story of forgiveness.
- We'll Always Have Paris by Melissa D The popularity of the 'Exchange Program' cliche has its roots the classic WAHP. Draco and Hermione go on an exchange program to Beauxbatons Academy. They enter a rocky partnership to help each other make it through all of their classes; neither of them thinks falling in love will be part of the deal.
- Upon A Thyme by Zensho Once Upon a Thyme gave birth and started the huge boom of ongoing time-travelling stories in the fandom. Mixture of 'Potion Gone Wrong' and 'Time-Travelling' plot devices. A plot-driven, cleverly written and well-liked piece in the fandom.
- The Fires Of Beltane by Sorceress One night each year, romance is possible between even the most unlikely people. Can a certain professor affect the lives of two students in order to possibly change one's fate?
- Pansy's Volcano by Bluemidget Pansy's Volcano set a new standred for the sub-genre of hormone driven fics, providing plot and good writing. The fic also helped popularized cliches that Dramione fans have come to love and hate.
- Their Room by Aleximoon Draco and Hermione are stuck doing an Arithmancy project together. They have to get past their deep-rooted hatred of each other in order to get their work done. Throw in a couple of monsters, a few disapproving friends, a scheming Pansy, an angry Lucius, and you've got this fic in a nutshell.
- The Passion of Hate and Love by Callisto Callispi Noted for its heart-wrenching romance and elaborate plot, Callisto Callispi's story was the first major work that ever explored the now-common plot device of what would happen if Draco and Hermione were to spend time in detention together.
- Future Parents Program by Avari20 This story took the Draco/Hermione baby premise and expanded it to a whole new level. As one of her early works, it's clear that FPP was pre-beta days, but Avari20 doesn't disappoint. Draco's capacity for dry wit and snarkiness are exploited to the fullest, creating a story that is genuinely funny. Draco's mother and Dumbledore create the Future Parents Program, an experimental course that is to teach students vital aspects of daily life through parenting a 'real' baby. Draco and Hermione are paired, and throughout the story we are entertained by their mishaps coupled with that of Harry, Ron, Luna, Pansy, and Neville.
- Adamo Fidelitas by Pixiezombie This fic is orignial 'Potions Gone Wrong' D/Hr, and it contuines to be a fan favourite, frequently appearing on rec lists and cited as an example for the 'Potions Gone Wrong' theme.
- Draco Malfoy, the Amazing Bouncing... Rat? by Maya The comic potential of D/Hr is given free reign here with Hermione Granger cast as the straight man to an over-the-top version of Draco Malfoy. The ever popular potion making mistake plot devise is delivered with an amusing twist.
- Draco's Delicate Condition by Alice In Muggleland and it's sequel Draco's Other Declicate Condition.
- A Dowry of a Single Galleon by Krissy shares lineage with the Marriage Law challenge (arranged marriage) that cleverly exploits the portrayal of wizard culture from the novels and films with conventional plot devices (marriage contract, dowry, trial marriage, virgin bride) from historical romance.
- The God of the Lost by Gravidy Widely acknowledged as one of the best novel length stories attempted in the ship, Gravidy's work in GoTL is distinguished by the hyper-realism of her depiction of racism in the wizard world and by her perspective on house politics at Hogwarts.
- The Dragon's Bride by Rizzle This epic love story may have a cliche premise, but the author puts a fresh spin on the plot. Summary: 7th year. Draco and Hermione awaken in a Muggle hotel room, naked, hung-over and tattooed. They also happen to be married. Thus begin a desperate search for a solution to their sticky situation. After all, who in their right mind would want to be married to Draco Malfoy? Surely not Hermione… Written in response to the challenge issued by ‘Piaa’.
- The Fool, the Emperor, and The Hanged Man by ian_waiting, the author's writing is a perfect example for a summary of what D/Hr fic is Post - HBP. Fresh, exceptionally well-written, dark, mature and featuring a thick plot. Also a larger view of the War, as in Pre - HBP a majority of fics featured the war ending during their Hogwarts years. As The Fool, the Emperor, and The Hanged Man shows, the war with Voldemort may be over but there is always a darkness.
- The Fallout by Sage Widely acknowledged as one of the best fics in the ship. 'Hermione learns about growing up through the redemption of Draco Malfoy.'
- Broken by inadaze22 An epic tackling some heavy problems in Hermione's life after the war. Depicts a slow paced, but realistic love story between Draco and Hermione.
- The Bracelet by AkashaTheKitty A love triangle, is a frequent fic request but there are very few and none as fantastic as The Bracelet. The author provides something a little fresh by reminding us, there are more boys Hogwarts than just Harry and Ron.
One-shots, Short Stories
- Lights Out by Phoebe and it's sequel As Beautiful As Days Can Be Recognized as one of the fanfics that popularized the pairing, Lights Out is widely recced in the fandom for its spot-on characterization and the realistic take on its dynamics of Draco and Hermione. Draco's POV.
- Written in the Ashes by Callisto Callispi Acknowledged as one of the best of post-war short fiction, Callisto Callispi's story was one of the pioneering works that employed flashbacks and the two themes, memory and amnesia, to drive the plot to a stunning conclusion.
