[edit] Timeline
Below is a partial timeline of events in the Harry Potter fan fiction community featuring Draco Malfoy:
[edit] 1997
- Philosopher's Stone released. Draco and Ginny never interact. Draco/Ginny shippers? Undeterred.
[edit] 1998
- Chamber of Secrets released. Still no Draco/Ginny in canon. Draco/Ginny shippers pay no attention.
[edit] 1999
- Prisoner of Azkaban released. Draco and Ginny do not fall in love but the shippers soldier on.
[edit] 2000
- Goblet of Fire released. The new canon gives no hints to D/G but the shippers decide now is the time! The ship takes off.
- April 2000, the earliest popular D/G fan fiction was Alicia/Sue's "Unlikely Coven" series which began on April 9, 2000. [1] This story has been cited as the source of the D/G ship as the other early stories were not widely read.
- The fanon of Leather Pants!Draco was beginning to develop, being spurred on by Heidi. This is demonstrated by a public post made by Heidi8 on October 2, 2000:
- I must say I've taken about as much time dwelling on how on earth to
- get Draco into leather pants as I have on any other more
- significant plot twist. I hope it's not too ridiculous....
- December 2000 ended with Cassandra Claire implying on HP_FanFiction that her story might become a slash story. [2] The following extract gives that clue:
- * Cassie ponders about where to fit a / into DS.* My favorite pairing
- after Harry/Draco (which I really can't make work) is Remus/Sirius,
- and Sirius needs to marry Narcissa so H&D can stay related, and
- anyway, Remus has been turned, possibly permanently, into a big wolf.
- That leaves Ron, I guess, available for.....um.....well, we'll see.
- grins* The Ron/Draco knife-throwing scene I believe started out as a
- response to the Teenage Witches who asked for a scene with Ron and
- Draco where Draco starts taking off his clothes. They tend to ask for
- peculiar things, but then they are peculiar people. ;)[3]
- On February 17, 2001, Cassandra Claire made the following post to HPforGrownUps:
- I would MUCH rather see Hermione end up with Draco than with Ron, as long as Draco mends his ways a bit (I don't want him to be "nice" either.) On alternate days, I would rather see Hermione wind up with Draco than with Harry. (A fact which affords Lori much pain, I am aware.) Ron/Hermione actively squicks me, Ron/Harry just puzzles me, and as for Ron/Draco...what CAN they be thinking?
- ...I don't think this necessarily means that I don't like Ron, which is an accusation often leveled at us H/H types...I like him okay. I just don't like him with Hermione. However, if the books do tend that way, I will survive. After all, Little Women is still one of my favorite childhood books, even though I have never forgiven Louisa May Alcott for what she did to Jo and Laurie -- a horrendous mistake IMHO. [4][5]
- This is somewhat of importance as Cassandra Claire is generally associated with either Harry/Hermione or Harry/Draco. Many people forget that, for a time, Cassandra Claire was actively dabbling in the Hermione/Draco ship, a pairing she shared with Heidi.
[edit] 2001
- During early to mid 2001, Rhysenn was one of the most popular Harry/Draco writers in the Harry Potter fandom. This is evident by the amount of awards Rhysenn won that year for the HP Slash Awards. [6]
- On May 31, 2001, the fact that Cassandra Claire was borrowing from other sources and not properly crediting them is not widely known. While she later she admits she did this, Cassandra Claire claimed that there was a sort of game with her readers. This is clearly not visible in posts like the one posted on this day on ParadigmOfUncertainty. In it, a note by Rachel Adams, the author mentions that she was talking to her brother on the phone about the story and had quoted a funny line from the story. Her brother told her that the line was really from Red Dwarf. The author doesn't quite see the Rimmer/Draco symmetry. Still, the author appreciated the references. [7] The context of the post makes it abundantly clear that the author was not aware of Cassandra Claire doing this prior to the phone conversation with her brother. This indicates that fandom at large was not aware of the game Cassandra Claire later claimed was being played, a game that Heidi also verified as going on.
- In November 2001, the Harry Potter fan fiction community would eventually get to a point where JK Rowling was fundamentally not respected by a large contingent of the fan base. This fan base preferred the works of several big name fans instead and the fanon universes created by these characters. Cassandra Claire was fundamental in this movement and her stories, along with Lori Summers' work would help lead the way for many a Harry/Hermione shipper, whether they were aware of this or not. It became evident that this would be the course in posts like the following dated to this era:
- Author: frantyck@...
- Subject:The Canonist Manifesto (long)
- Date: Fri Nov 16, 2001 6:30 pm
- This process has begun, because many questions on this list concern fundamentals such as the nature of magic and wizarding social relations. There are also a couple of imperialistic HP fanfiction universes, something like but not fully consistent with Rowling canon, such as Cassandra Claire's Draco-centric fics and Lori Summers' H/H adult fics, which, by sheer compelling popularity, are drawing other fanfic writers into their orbits. Who will win? [8]
- Sarvihaara founded the glassesreflect mailing list on November 6, 2001, devoted to James slash and Harry slash, and would go on to found the Potter Slash Archive (PSA). [9] This list had a membership larger than WhenIKissedTheTeacher. (White_Serpent: [10]) This mailing list, too, would become one of the largest in Harry Potter fandom. [11] Because PSA accepted Harry slash, its archive would eventually be dominated by Harry/Draco stories written by members of the Inner Circle, including Cassandra Claire, Aja, and IvyBlossom.
[edit] 2002
- From late 2002 to 2004, Harry Potter slash fans went through a period where they were obsessed with writing the students of Hogwarts, primarily Draco and Harry as wearing leather pants. This was popularized by authors like Cassandra Claire, Heidi8, IvyBlossom, Aja and Stacey. [12]
- On April 25, 2002, the Harry/Draco role-playing game nocturne_alley moved to Livejournal [13]
- On May 19, 2002, the LiveJournal community harrylovesdraco was created. [14]

[edit] 2005
- Half-Blood Prince released. Draco is teased about Ginny, encouraging shippers to the point of delight. Draco partially redeemed but Ginny snogs Harry. One step forward, two steps back. Shippers decide writing more fic will solve the problem. One concots an elaborate love potion theory, that, unlike other love potion theories, does not make Ginny the villian, but manages to predict that Ginny will eventually end up with Draco.Addendum: Well, actually it was two shippers-- Creamtea and Anise.
- On April 12, 2005, the LiveJournal community harrydraco_recs was created. [18]

- December 20-29, 2005: FIA is closed for transfer to a new host and upgrade to efiction2. Panic ensues.
[edit] 2006
- On August 14, 2006, The FIA Forums [20] open with a monumental amount of posts and registrations. As of March 14, 2007, there are 507 members and over 19,000 posts.
- On September 22, 2006, the first D/G podcast premiered. [21].
