Dragon Ball Z is a sequel to the highly popular action/comedy series Dragon Ball. This series picked up four years after the end of Dragon Ball with Goku an adult and having a four-year-old son of his own, Gohan. With Piccolo vanquished, Goku's life had become peaceful; then, a mysterious stranger arrived on Earth from outer space, bringing news that not only was he there to destroy the planet, but that he was Goku's long-lost older brother! This was the beginning of another long-running series of adventures for Goku and his family, as well as new friends, enemies and allies they made along the way.

While Dragon Ball Z encompassed only the middle part of a three-series canon story arc, it became the most popular of the three among fen.[1] [2]

September 13, 1996: Dragon Ball Z premiered on television in the United States.[7]
February 7, 1996: Dragon Ball GT premiered on television in Japan.[8] [9]
In 1998, Dragon Ball Z was aired on the Cartoon Network.
On September 19, 1999, THE COMING OF TRENDE (part 1 of the Trende series by Trende became the first Dragon Ball Z story published on FanFiction.Net. [10][11]

On January 3, 2000, Dragon Ball Z premiered on television in Australia. [12]
On February 25, 2000, the Saiyan Slash mailing list was created.

On April 6, 2001, the Dragon Ball Z LiveJournal community rockthedragon was created. [13]
On April 8, 2001 Dragon Ball V by Val became the first French language Dragon Ball Z story published on FanFiction.Net. [14][15]
On April 14, 2001, El destino es uno solo by Bulmis became the first Spanish language Dragon Ball Z story published on FanFiction.Net. [16][17]
On April 28, 2001, Pagando os erros by tatychan became the first Portuguese language Dragon Ball Z story published on FanFiction.Net. [18][19]
On June 5, 2001, Dragon Ball premiered on television in the United States. [20]
On June 23, 2001, the LiveJournal community dbzanime was created. [21]
On July 9, 2001, the LiveJournal community dbz_android18 was created. [22]
On July 10, 2001, DBZ: The Saga Continues by Nguyen Tran Loc became the first German language Dragon Ball Z story published on FanFiction.Net. [23][24]

On February 24, 2002, Terug in de tijd by Mykerinos became the first Dutch language story published on FanFiction.Net. [26][27]

On July 1, 2002, the LiveJournal community prince_veggie was created. [29]
On August 26, 2002, Dragon Ball Z premiered on television in Denmark. [30]
On August 28, 2002, the LiveJournal community dragonballyaoi was created. [31]
In September 2002, AnimeFEST 2002 was held in Dallas, Texas. [32] There were a number of Dragon Ball related things connected with this convention.
On September 21, 2002, Dragon Ball Z premiered on television in Israel. [33]

On rec.games.frp.dnd in a post by Sea Wasp dated July 1, 2003 with a subject of "Coolest Fantasy Villain" said, in explaining male/male fan fiction for this fan fiction community:

AFAIK, Trek was the start of it all. However, some certainly do have longevity beyond the few years -- Char Azanabul has been boinking male and female co-stars of many shows since Mobile Suit Gundam debuted in 1979. Saint Seiya and its related shows have maintained devoted slash followings. Much more frightening, perhaps, is that Dragonball/DBZ has maintained similar followings.

On July 3, 2003, the LiveJournal community bad_smutfic was created. [35] Among the fan fiction communities represented on this community include: Dragon Ball, Final Fantasy, Full House, Gunsmoke, Harry Potter, Scooby Doo, Star Trek, Star Wars, The Strokes, and X-Files.
In September 2003, Dragon Ball GT premiered on television in the United States. [36]
On September 5, 2003, Dragon Ball GT premiered on television in Canada. [37]
On November 11, 2003, the LiveJournal community _dragonballx_ was created. [38]

By 2004, the term drabble is being used in the Dead Zone, Dragon Ball Z and Stargate Atlantis fan fiction communities. The usage of the term probably predates this usage as it is based on LiveJournal drabble community founding.
On May 24, 2004, the Dragon Ball icon LiveJournal community dragonballicons was created. [39]
In May 2004, Jeanne Burch posted chapter 33 of Vejiitasei Ascendant.
On August 6, 2004, the MySpace group dbzgamer was created. [40]

On March 8, 2005, the LiveJournal community dbzyaoishota was created. [42]
On March 14, 2005, the Dragon Ball Z icon LiveJournal community dbzicons was created.[43]
On April 3, 2005, the MySpace group GOKU was created. [44]
On April 25, 2005, the LiveJournal community dbzbadboys was created. [45]
On July 28, 2005, the MySpace group dbzstraight was created. [46]
On August 4, 2005, the LiveJournal community dbzyaoi_love was created. [47]

Fan art, such as this portrait of Son Gohan by Studio Stomita, was passed around the Internet to help perpetuate the DBAF hoax, even if the original fan artist had nothing to do with the hoax.

In 2000, the persistent rumors of another series after Dragon Ball GT led to a hoax "series" called Dragon Ball AF.[56] [57] It has been disproven by all official Dragon Ball Z sources numerous times.[58]
