FictionAlley.Org
From Fan History Wiki
On July 22, 2001, FictionAlley.Org, a fan fiction archive, opened. It would become one of the most influential Harry Potter fan fiction archives. Cassandra Claire's fan fiction was archived here and the site was closely associated with her and Heidi8. It opened one month after Cassandra Claire got kicked off FanFiction.Net for plagiarism; allegations that FictionAlley.Org was founded specifically due to her removal have followed the site ever since.[1]
When the site was founded, it allegedly plagiarized FanFiction.Net's terms of service.[2] Shortly before the site was founded, Flourish, who maintained FanFiction.Net's terms of service, resigned and was removed from FanFiction.Net's staff. Heidi8 responded to these accusations of plagiarism.[3]
It was described as the following by Jessica Tiffin of the University of Capetown[4]:
- http://www.fictionalley.org Harry Potter fanfic. Schnoogle is novel-length, Astronomy Tower is romance, Riddiklus is comedy, Dark Arts is angsty. Generally higher quality than Fanfiction.net. For more transgressive Harry Potter fic, try Weasleycest: I recommend Cassie Claire's "Mortal Instruments", for explicit erotic (NC 17 rating) plus a nasty sting in the tail.

[edit] Additional FictionAlley.Org timeline
- February 2001 - Plans for FictionAlley.Org may have begun. [11] This may have been because she and those close to her were unable to be archived on the Sugar Quill, or thought that it was not an option because Sugar Quill "are very specific [about] what they'll archive," [12] and these restrictions included their material. [13][14][15][16][17]
- June 2001 - Other possible date for plans to start the site. [18]
- July 3 2001 - Fiction Alley started officially when FictionAlleyWriters was opened. [19] (Early posts to this list give no indication that FictionAlley.Org was being planned in February, before Cassandra Claire was removed from FanFiction.Net for plagiarism.) The first post is not until July 7, 2001.
- On July 10, 2001, the FictionAlley.Org EzBoards were set up. [20]
- July 11, 2001 - Heidi began to promote FictionAlley on FanFiction.Net by posting cookies to stories. [21] Zsenya had been invited by Heidi to help with the new archive and was on the mailing list, where she expressed concern over this as she thought it was a violation of FanFiction.Net's terms of service. [22] After Zsenya expressed this opinion, it appears that she de-affiliated herself with Heidi's project as she never made another post to FictionAlleyWriters.
- On July 13, 2001, Draco Dormiens was archived on Fiction Alley. [23] , on July 16, 2001.
- On July 16, 2001, Heidi's stories were archived on FictionAlley.Org. In a post to fandom_history (LiveJournal), Heidi claimed that her stories were the first to be archived on FictionAlley.Org [citation needed] Heidi, like Cassandra Claire, was discovered to be a plagiarist in August 2006. See more on [Heidi's Plagiarism].
- Shortly after the July 23, 2001 archive opening announcements on several mailing lists (such as ParadigmofUncertainty, HP_Paradise, and Sirius_Black_and_Remus_Lupin) FictionAlley.Org's server went down. [24]
- On July 28, 2001, FanFiction.Net began what would be an extended downtime, considerably helping launch of FictionAlley.Org [25] This extended downtime continued until at least July 31, 2001 - Steven Savage in July 2006 confirmed that the server had been having problems for some time because of the traffic load and additional features offered on the site. FanFiction.Net was not hacked and FictionAlley.Org had nothing to do with it. [26]
- On August 1, 2001, Fiction Alley was opened for a public beta test. [27]
- FanFiction.Net continued to have more downtime in August from around the fifth to the eleventh. [28][29][30] [31]
- On August 24, 2001, chapter one of Draco Veritas was posted on FictionAlley.Org. [32]
- During the fall of 2001, the Harry Potter fan fiction community started to suffer its first real fractures. Prior to this, almost everyone had been on FanFiction.Net. While Fiction Alley filled some of the void some parts of the fandom (such as the Snapeslashers) had already closed off from the rest, and a number of redundant archives were created, allowing further sequestering based on friends and shipping preferences.
- September 2001 - Gryffindor Tower was founded. This site, unlike SugarQuill and FictionAlley.Org allowed smut and adult rated material dedicated to Harry/Ginny. This pairing was hated by Cassandra Claire. [33] [34][35] Her anti-Harry/Ginny attitude helped fuel tensions between Gryffindor Tower, SugarQuill, and FictionAlley.Org.
- Around September 5, 2001, FanFiction.Net was still crashing repeatedly. [36]
