FFN-Slashers-Unite
From Fan History Wiki
FFN-Slashers-Unite was a mailing lists for slash writers on FanFiction.Net, founded November 19th 2000. It was created by Silver.
At the time of the creation of this list, being a slash writer on FanFiction.Net had been difficult as it wasn't as generally accepted then as it is now. Slash writers would often receive a lot of abuse and negative comments from other people as soon as they posted their stories. In order to create a safe environment for slash writers and give them an identity and sense of pride, the list was created. The initial purpose of it was to give mutual support and laugh at flames together, offer encouraging comments and counteract the negativity they were confronted with.
During its time, FFN-Slashers-Unite has offered a serious discussion forum for all aspects of slash, as well as giving writers an opportunity to promote their own writing and find constructive criticism. The humorous 10 Steps to Successful Flaming [1] which poked fun at slash flaming also originated on that list, having become quite popular on FanFiction.Net before it was deleted together with the list-category.
Taglines of the group were "We're eeeeeeew sick!!!! and proud of it!" and "Roasted crispy with pride!"
As slash has become more accepted over the years and no longer is faced with such harsh criticism, FFN-Slashers-Unite is now defunct and has been inactive for years.
[edit] Timeline
- On December 8, 2000, Draco Dormiens was plugged by Rhysenn in an off topic kind of way on FFN-Slashers-Unite. [2] Rhysenn was, by this time, a friend of Cassandra Claire and an active member of HPforGrownUps. She would later start a mailing list for her and Cassandra Claire's work and discussion of that work. Her post is important because it was the first time Cassandra Claire was mentioned on this list. She does not get another mention on FFN-Slashers-Unite until Rhysenn later plugs her new mailing list. This plug was also a bit weird as, at this time, Cassandra Claire's story was not slash and the list was specifically a slash mailing list.
- In April 2001, FFN-Slashers-Unite discussed the difference between slash and yaoi. [3]
- On April 24, 2001, a Slasher's Consensus was started which remained open for as long as the list was active. [4]
- On June 24, 2001, FFN-Slashers-Unite had a discussion about Cassandra Claire's plagiarism. Some authors on this list removed their work from FanFiction.Net because they did not want what was done to Cassie done to them; they feared not getting warned that their stories were being removed for plagiarism. Silver clarified that Cassandra Claire had been contacted. [5]
- Between June and November 2001, FFN-Slashers-Unite discussed the ethical implications of Real Person Slash. [6]
