Face/Murdock
From Fan History Wiki
Face/Murdock is a pairing of Templeton Peck and Howling Mad Murdock from the series/movie/comic The A-Team. It is easily one of the largest slash ships in A-Team fandom, alongside Hannibal/Face.

[edit] Introduction
Although this is certainly a non-canon pairing, fans of the pairing point out numerous factors influencing their preference for this 'ship, including:
- The brotherly-like affection between the two characters, including Face's easy tolerance, most of the time, for Murdock's crazy antics.
- Occasional touches and looks between the characters which can be read as subtextually slashy.
- The close, continued friendship between the actors who played the characters, Dirk Benedict and Dwight Schultz, which fans cite was as evident on-screen as well as off (although to date, no known RPS about the actors has been published.)
[edit] Canon moments
Episodes which are popular with Face/Murdock ship supporters include:
- "Family Reunion" - in this episode, Murdock leans what could be an important piece of information about Face's family and struggles with whether to tell him or not. When the truth is finally revealed, it leads to an emotional exchange between the characters, one of the most intense ever presented on the show.
- "Without Reservations" - the final-aired episode of The A-Team featured Face getting wounded in a restaurant shoot-out. Murdock must tend to him and keep him alive while trying to get help. It is a classic hurt/comfort and angst-fic set-up which has prompted a tremendous number of missing scene and aftermath stories for the pairing.

[edit] Timeline
Below is a partial timeline of events that took place in this shipping community.
During the early wave of A-Team slash fiction, coming out of 'zines from England in the late 1980s and early 1990s, there was not a great deal of Face/Murdock being written (or at least published in 'zines). The primary pairing was Hannibal/Face, and it was reported that certain active 'zine editors, due to their own personal preference for that pairing, would not accept very much Face/Murdock fiction to print.(sidewinder)
Face/Murdock, however, became much more popular once the fandom moved on-line in the mid-to-late 1990s. Sockii published a number of Face/Murdock stories in her het/slash 'zine series Whatever Gets You Through The Night, and a lot of Face/Murdock fiction appeared on the fiction mailing list which had grown out of the onthejazz list. Face/Murdock would continue to be popular into the 2000s, although there appeared to be a resurgence of Hannibal/Face fiction as well, perhaps leaving a more equal distribution of fiction between the two pairings at the present time.
[edit] Kerfluffles
There have been some minor ship wars and arguments between proponents of Face/Murdock vs. Hannibal/Face. While many of these arguments would go on at length providing rationalized reasons why one pairing makes more "sense" than the other, the underlying explanation for most of the preference seemed to boil down to which character writers & readers found more attractive: Hannibal or Murdock.
