Fan is short for fanatic. A fan of a television show, book, comic, anime, movie or video game is some one who likes that show, book, movie or video game.

The following term dates to December 2001 in the Harry Potter fandom:
- Fans: Not the mechanical-thingy you use on a hot day. These are people who love certain shows, authors, actors, singers etc, etc . . . This sort of attraction tends to manifest itself in many ways—eg. fan sites, fanfiction, fanart, the buying of heaps of associated merchandise. [1]
The following definition is from the science fiction fandom and dates to November 2003:
- fan
- One who is in organized fandom, other than just reading/watching SF, participate s and interacts with other people with similar interests at parties, cons, newsg roups, fanzines, etc. One who has an aquaintance with the history, jargon, and customs of the subcultu re. [2]
