In 1977, Sharon Ferraro and Paula Smith created the Fan Quality Awards (FanQ) awards in conjunction with SeKwester*Con Too. The original categories were Star Trek fandom awards for Best Writer and Best Artist. Various conventions hosted the Fan Q awards until the first MediaWest in 1981, after which they were always given out at that convention. After Star Wars fans basically did a clean sweep of the Fan Qs in 1981, the awards were changed to be given by fandom. This was to give greater exposure and prevent similar occurrences.

The Fan Quality Awards (FanQ) are awarded to any new fan-produced publication or items printed within a fan-produced publication or by itself, from the previous calendar year before the subsequent Media West Con. Fans do not have to be a member of Media West Con to nominate works for Fan Q's awards, but if not a member then a person must pay a one dollar fee to vote.

Below is a partial list of winners and nominees.
