Filing off the serial numbers
From Fan History Wiki
Filing off the serial numbers refers to the process of converting a piece of fan-fiction into a salable piece of "original" fiction. By changing the names of characters and specific setting or plot-points, a fan-fiction author is able to publish a story originally written as fanfic as a professional story or novel. It can also be done to fiction not intended for professional publication, but which the author wishes to publish on-line or in a fanzine without using the source's character or real names.
"Filing off the serial numbers" can occur to varying degrees of change between the original fan-fiction piece and the new piece submitted for publication. It is a process that has been known to occur in numerous fandoms from rock band real person fiction to Xena:Warrior Princess alt fiction.
