Final Fantasy is a series of video games created by the Japanese company Square-Enix.Final Fantasy VII is arguably the most popular game in the series, with at least four spin-off games, a movie, and a cartoon based on it.

- On September 16, 1996, FFML (Final Fantasy Mailing List) was created as a place to post FF fanfiction.

- Final Fantasy VII is released (January 31 in Japan, September 7 in the United States).
[edit] 1998-1999
- During 1998 and 1999, most of the fan fiction communities that currently matter in the Final Fantasy community were founded. (Caleb Nova)

- On September 9, 1999, Final Fantasy VIII is released in the United States.

- In 2000, FanFiction.Net ran a beta certification process. People who wished to be certified as beta readers were asked to beta read a story, treating the process as they would any story they normally beta read. This was run by Michela Ecks and Niamh Crilly as part of FanFiction.Net's Writers University. The pass rate was roughly one in four.
- On November 14, 2000, Final Fantasy IX is released in the United States.

- On December 19, 2001, Final Fantasy X is released in the United States. This was the first game in the series on the PlayStation 2 platform, and the first to feature full voice acting.

- On July 3, 2003, the LiveJournal community bad_smutfic was created. [1] Among the fan fiction communities represented on this community include: Dragon Ball, Final Fantasy, Full House, Gunsmoke, Harry Potter, Scooby Doo, Star Trek, Star Wars, The Strokes, and X-Files.
- On November 18, 2003, Square-Enix released Final Fantasy X-2 in the United States.

- The first Final Fantasy Wiki, The Final Fantasy Wiki, opens on February 7, 2004. It is formed by Reeve.

- Final Fantasy Wiki is started on March 13, 2005.
- The FF_Press community is created on LiveJournal on May 12, 2005.
- On September 7, 2005, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is released on video in Japan.

- Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is released in the United States on April 25, 2006.
- On October 31, 2006, Final Fantasy XII is released in the United States.

- On January 1, 2007, the LiveJournal community 7musicalmusesv2 was created, and it hoped to include Final Fantasy among its fandoms.
- On April 21, 2007, the Final Fantasy XII LiveJournal community ff12insanity was created. [2]
