- On March 22, 2001, the mailing list milliways-L was created for the posting of science fiction related fan fiction and discussion. Fandoms represented included would eventually include this one. [1]

- On March 6, 2002, the fansite FIREFLYFANS.NET was created. [2]
- On June 1, 2002, the LiveJournal community fireflyfans was created. [3]
- On September 20, 2002, the show premiered on television in the United States. [4]
- On September 21, 2002, the LiveJournal community whedons_firefly was created. [5]
- On September 30, 2002, the LiveJournal community serenityfirefly was created. [6]
- On December 14, 2002, an English language article about the show was created on Wikipedia. [7]

- "On June 23, 2006 fans organized the first worldwide charity screenings of Serenity in 47 cities, dubbed as Can’t Stop the Serenity or CSTS, an homage to the movie’s tagline, "Can’t stop the signal."[66] The event raised over $65,000[67] for Whedon's favorite charity, Equality Now." [37]
- "Another campaign on June 23, 2006 referred to the date as Serenity Day,[69] on which fans bought—and got others to buy—copies of the Serenity and Firefly DVDs in hopes of convincing Universal that creating a sequel was a good business decision. - alien_altars was created on March 18, 2007 as a challenge community for femslash cliches. Some cliches include About to die, must have hot sex, Aliens made us do it, Amnesia, Aphrodisiacs/Sex pollen, Caught masturbating, Everyone thinks we're doing it, Forced marriage, Forced to share a bed/sleeping bag/tent, Fuzzy morning after or "do you remember what we did last night?", Genderswitch (one or both women is turned into a man), Huddling for warmth, Insomnia, Jealousy, Kid fic are just a few of the examples to chose from. Fandoms represented include Firefly. [41]
- "as of May 2007, it was the most popular science fiction show amongst users of tv.com" [42]
- "NASA Browncoat Astronaut Steven Swanson[70] took the Firefly and Serenity DVDs with him on Space Shuttle Atlantis' STS-117 mission, which lifted off on Friday June 8, 2007. The DVDs will permanently reside on the International Space Station as a form of entertainment for the station's crews.[71]" [43]
- In August 2007, due to a rumor that Yahoo!Groups was removing users who were lurking on mailing lists in this fandom, a number of mailing lists saw an increase in participation so that would not happen. While this rumor was not true, and Yahoo was only removing people who had e-mail accounts bouncing in excess of six months, it did not stop a certain level of hysteria.

- It may be for some fandoms, but not all. Some of my fandoms are well-repressented on LJ, but I wouldn’t say any of them are the main channel for that fandom’s fanwork. For Firefly I would say the main channel is Fireflyfans.net, for Gilmore Girls I would say Fanfiction.net and BWR are the main channels. Firefly seems well-repressented on LJ, at least to my impression, though I’m not an LJ user, but I can’t say GG has that strong a presence on LJ, at least not that big a group… [64]
