[edit] Introduction

Real Ghostbusters is the animated version of the hit 80's movie Ghostbusters, featuring the continuing adventures of Egon Spengler, Ray Stantz, Peter Venkman, Winston Zeddemore, and Janine Melnitz (and the spud, Slimer, too).

The connotation "Real" was added due to copyright conflict with another animed series by Filmation that got to the "Ghostbusters" moniker first. [1]

The Real Ghostbusters debuted in 1986 on ABC and featured an unusually high level of quality in its stories. Much of this can be attributed to J. Michael Straczynski, the head writer for the first two years. Many elements of Poe, Lovecraft and other masterworks of horror can be spotted in episodes.

Unfortunately, ABC determined that Slimer was the source of RGB's rating success, and slowly but surely the spud grew in prominence. Perhaps not coincidentally the quality of the ABC scripts declined almost proportionately.

  • During the late 1980s, the community was producing a number of fanzines.
  • During the late 1980s, smarm was defined by the Real Ghostbusters community as "regarded as purple prosey, way over-the-top, hurt/comfort or buddy-buddy fanfic." [2]

[edit] 2000s

  • During the 2000s, slash has not been very tolerated in the community. Some members were squicked by it and others found it out of character. Many readers on Ghostbusters.net would intentionally rate stories low if they had slash, rather than judging a story on the quality of the writing.
