[edit] Introduction
Real Ghostbusters is the animated version of the hit 80's movie Ghostbusters, featuring the continuing adventures of Egon Spengler, Ray Stantz, Peter Venkman, Winston Zeddemore, and Janine Melnitz (and the spud, Slimer, too).
The connotation "Real" was added due to copyright conflict with another animed series by Filmation that got to the "Ghostbusters" moniker first. [1]
The Real Ghostbusters debuted in 1986 on ABC and featured an unusually high level of quality in its stories. Much of this can be attributed to J. Michael Straczynski, the head writer for the first two years. Many elements of Poe, Lovecraft and other masterworks of horror can be spotted in episodes.
Unfortunately, ABC determined that Slimer was the source of RGB's rating success, and slowly but surely the spud grew in prominence. Perhaps not coincidentally the quality of the ABC scripts declined almost proportionately.
