[edit] Introduction
The Gorillaz fandom's existence predates July 2005. Material for this fandom can be found several places on the Internet including FanDomination.Net. [1] It is generally believed that there is not an off-line, convention and fanzine based fan fiction community related to this community.
[edit] The Band
The band front members 2D/Stu-pot (Stuart Tusspot), Russel Hobbes, Mudoc Jacob Niccals and Noodle (real name unknown) are fictional. The real members Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett however, are written about in many fan fiction pieces.

[edit] Timeline
Below is a partial timeline of events that took place in this fan fiction community.
- The Gorillaz fandom has been around probably since shortly before the band's debut, the self-titled Gorillaz. The fandom at first was fairly small and largely based in the United Kingdom but would quickly expand to several more countries, such as the Netherlands, the United States and other countries.
- There are currently considered four eras in the fandom: Phase One Era, The Celebrity Takedown Era, Phase Two Era and Post-Phase Two Era.
- On November 17, 1999, Gorillaz.com was registered. [2]
- At some point most likely in 2001, Gorillaz-Unofficial is started by 2-J with the intention of bringing accurate and up-to-date news about the fictional band. As the band grew in popularity, so did the fansite.
- At some point, FanFiction.Net [3] opened a section for Gorillaz fanfiction, which was not deleted when they decided to get rid of Real Person Fic, such as those for WWF and BandFic.
- During the Celebrity Takedown era, fandom dies down and many fans who had made major contributions abandon the boards and are never heard of again-particularly after the beginning of the Phase Two Era.
- In early 2006, there were three active fan groups on the Official Forum: 2Dists, Murdoc Minions and the Murdoc and 2D Groupies.
- During the release of Feel Good Inc., fandom reaches critical mass. It sustains itself until shortly after the premier of the El Manana video.
- General panic ensues at the release of the El Manana video and Noodle's apparent death. Two enigmatic posts from Noodle the day do nothing to dent the sheer power and number of fan responses.
- In September/October 2006, both the 2Dist and Murdoc Minions were shut down because of the amount of spam and 'raids' where fans would post insults and wreak general havoc in both groups.
- In early November, a "radio transmission" is heard on their flash site in "The Room of Brians" that is of Noodle maydaying the bassist, Murdoc. She apparently needs a map and is telling the band to leave the house "before it's too late". [4]
- November 9, 2006: Fandom member Anthiena creates the original entry to fanhistory.com.
