[edit] Introduction

A green day is a day where you just sit around, smoking pot....It's also the name of one of the greatest rock bands ever! Green Day, with their 7 studio albums, 3 EPs, and their 3 compilation albums, have become an iconic band for teenagers all around the world.

[edit] The Beginning

Billie Joe Armstrong met Michael Ryan Pritchard (AKA Mike Dirnt) when they went to John Sweet High School in California. They were only ten years old, but they shared an interest in playing music, and they eventually formed the band Sweet Children in 1987. The members included Billie Joe (guitar and vocals), Mike (bass), and their drummer John Kiftmeyer (AKA Al Sobrante). Their first official performance was at Rod's Hickory Pit in Vallejo, California.

Sweet Children became Green Day, and their first EP "1,000 Hours" was recorded, in only two days. Billie dropped out of high school and Mike graduated. They also made two other EPs, "Sweet Children" and "Slappy". Lookout Records! released a combination of these EPs called "39/Smooth".

John Kiftmeyer left and Green Day got a new drummer, Frank Edwin Wright III (AKA Tre Cool). Together, they recorded "Kerplunk," the band's second official album.

The band toured in an old van, gaining fans and getting noticed. Rob Cavallo, from Reprise Records, was one of the people who noticed Green Day. In 1993, the band signed on to the major record company. They lost many fans who hated them for "selling out", while at the same time gaining a new widespread, more "mainstream" fanbase.
