- On February 19, 2003, the Gunsmoke mailing list GunsmokeFanFiction was created. [6]
- On July 3, 2003, the LiveJournal community bad_smutfic was created. [7] Among the fan fiction communities represented on this community included this one.
- On January 15, 2004, Words Unspoken by the lurkerand and One Christmas Night by the lurker were the first Gunsmoke stories published on FanFiction.Net. [8]
- On October 14, 2004, Lee Goldberg discussed Gunsmoke fan fiction in his blog. [9] Kerfluffing in wider fandom took place as a result.
